PIECE BY PIECE is the 2005 second album from jazz-influenced rock artist and includes her interpretations of hits by Willie Nelson ("On The Road Again") and the Cure ("Just Like Heaven").

Georgia-born (as in the country, not the state) singer/songwriter Katie Melua found herself atop the British charts in 2003 with her breezy debut, Call Off the Search, which sold over three million copies in Europe alone. Her laid-back blend of blues, jazz, and pop with a kiss of worldbeat drew comparisons to Norah Jones, and rightfully so. She sticks to the formula on her lush, ultimately safe follow-up, Piece by Piece. This is Coldplay for the Diana Krall crowd, a perfectly rendered slice of adult contemporary pie for a lazy summer day delivered by an artist whose beautiful voice is almost striking in how unremarkable it is. Her longtime collaborator, producer/songwriter Mike Batt, provides the catchiest number, an odd and endearing little confection called "Nine Million Bicycles." It's both silly and sweet, two things that work in Melua's favor. Sure, she can vamp it up with the best of them on bluesy asides like "Shy Boy" and the dreadful "Blues in the Night," but there's a whole lot of innocence in that voice that just shrivels in the midst of all that bravado. Only in her early twenties, Melua's got plenty of time to decide on a persona, and Piece by Piece has enough quality material on it to placate fans until she does, but there's some tension here, and it doesn't sound intentional. Besides, anyone who covers Canned Heat and the Cure on the same record is still trying to figure it all out. ~ James Christopher Monger

5 stars I Love Her Voice
I heard Katie singing "Just Like Heaven" during the credits of the movie of the same name. I thought, "Who is this amazing singer?" I'd never done this before, but I got her name from the credits, went online and ordered her CD, and now I can't quit playing it. Her voice is full of emotion, and each time I listen I discover a new vocal inflection I had missed before--a little breathiness, a slight cry or crack in the voice at just the right moment. The songs are all great. I especially like Katie's "I Cried For You" and Mike Batt's "Thank You Stars" and "Nine Million Bicycles".

3 stars Grates a bit
No doubt that Ms Melua is talented but I sometimes feel she needs to introduce a couple of tracks to lift her albums out of the dreary zone. After a while the songs grate a bit.

5 stars fantastic
It's difficult to classify this artist--and we really should not. She has her own style and it is great. Amazing voice, thought provoking lyrics and very warm melodies. You can hear that her voice comes from a deep place in her soul. Chill out music with character. Hope to hear mych more from Katie.

What's Up Matador
What's Up Matador CDs  (1997)

Piece By Piece music CDs
CD $9.45  Audio Samples
Once Sub Pop's roster broke through to the mainstream in the early '90s, its reign as America's premier independent label drew to a close, leaving Matador Records as the definitive indie label of the decade. Matador's period of greatest impact was between 1991 and 1997, which is the time that the double-disc set What's Up Matador chronicles. The budget-priced compilation is designed as both an introduction and as a collector's dream, containing one disc called Favorite Tracks and one disc of unreleased songs. Matador didn't have a signature sound, preferring to cultivate a loose aesthetic that permitted its artists to do whatever the hell they wanted. So, there's the nervous punk of Superchunk, the jangling pop of Bettie Serveert, the fractured pop of Pavement, pure weirdness from the Frogs, mathematical rock from Chavez, disco from the Pizzicato Five, the avant rock of Silkworm, hardcore punk from Unsane, psycho-blues from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Railroad Jerk, and lo-fi from Guided By Voices and Spoon, along with singer/songwriters ...

CD $15.65  4 stars
A unique and rare double CD collection featuring the original 'girl power', punkily poptastic intergalactic girl band. Featuring previously unreleased versions of their hits, dance mixes and demos. Booklet includes notes by guitarist Jo Dunne, a complete discography, original 7' art and a limited edition Fuzz comic that accompanied their hit, 'Love Is A Slug'. Slimline double jewelcase. 2001 release. Although part of the title implies that this might be a career retrospective, in fact this is a double CD of odds and ends. They do span much of Fuzzbox's career (the bulk of it dating from the second half of the 1980s), but it shouldn't be mistaken for a best-of. Indeed, it's one of those releases whose detailed liner notes and gaudy colored insert you can pore over for quite some time without ever ascertaining whether any of the songs have been previously released. The identification of most, though not all, of the tracks as demos, live, "sketch," ...

Daltrey
Roger Daltrey Daltrey CD  (1973) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered; United Kingdom

Piece By Piece CD music
CD $13.15
Although Roger Daltrey was by no means the first member of the Who to take the solo plunge (both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend beat him to the punch), he was the first to make any kind of commercial impact. While "Giving It All Away" peeled off his self-titled debut album to hit the U.K. Top Five, the album itself went Top 50 in America and, almost as an afterthought, introduced the writing talents of the young and then-unknown Leo Sayer to the public at large. Eight months ahead of his own breakthrough hit, "The Show Must Go On," Sayer and writing partner Dave Courtney composed eight of Daltrey's ten tracks; Courtney co-produced the album with Adam Faith, then wrote the remaining pair with Faith himself. Of Sayer's contributions, both "Giving It All Away" and the opening "One Man Band" would subsequently reappear on his own Just a Boy album, itself titled for the chorus line of "Giving It All Away." Daltrey's majestically plaintive rendition remains the definitive version, however, all the more so when linked with the "It's a Hard Life" lament that serves as prelude to the song on Daltrey. Far from the rocking bombast for which the Who were traditionally renowned, but far, too, from the somewhat maudlin melancholy of Pete Townshend's period balladeering, "Giving It All Away" showcases the sheer emotional dynamism that Daltrey was so capable of, a mood that the remainder of the album stretched in any number of directions. From the mock reggae of "The Story So Far" to the achingly fragile "You Are Yourself," Daltrey portrays its maker in colors that the Who could never have emulated -- a sometimes horrifying shock for die-hard fans, but a pleasant surprise for anyone tired of hearing him voice the increasingly dictatorial Townshend's self-aggrandizement. Indeed, the string-haunted "When the Music Stops" could almost be an open letter to his bandmate, just as "One Man Band" should have determined Daltrey's own immediate future. Sadly, however, his solo adventuring would remain just that, something ...
