Cuban singer Xiomara Laugart, known in her native country simply as "La Negra," has already made a name for herself in the Latin jazz community as a singer in the Yerba Buena ensemble. On her eponymous solo debut, she combines elements of traditional Cuban folk music, jazz, and funk to create a musical mixture that dances around the edges of jazz but never commits to it fully, setting up a delightful musical tension that she nicely offsets with the warm, relaxed quality of her singing. Opening with the relatively poppy "La Llave," Xiomara then explores loungier sounds on "Por Ti" before lapsing into a slow and smoldering groove on "Tengo." "De Mis Recuerdos" blends a sweet melody and gently percolating rhythm to gorgeous effect, while "Moliendo Café" offers one of the strangest and most beguiling arrangements on the disc: rock guitars open the track playing a Kurt Weill-flavored cabaret lick, then the drums come in heavy; the guitars return later to shred in a decidedly metallic manner. The album's final two tracks consist only of Xiomara's voice, acoustic guitar, and the sound of snapping fingers. It's a surprisingly quiet but highly effective finish to a wonderful album. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Xiomara Laugart (vocals); Andres Levin (electric guitar); Andy González (upright bass); Pedro Martinez (drums, percussion, background vocals); Skoota Warner (drums); Cucu Diamantes (background vocals).

| Xiomara Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Not to be missed! I purchased this because of my introduction to Xiomara on a Yerba Buena CD. This album surpasses all of my expectations. Imagine the Buena Vista Social Club updated and modernized, and yet maintaining the feeling and honesty. This is a must if you like soulful jazz, excellent, honest singing, and intelligent lyrics (it's in Spanish, but even if you don't understand the language, you will feel it, dance to it, etc.). I don't know how the CD has been marketed, but plenty of inferior voices and productions are garnering sales and awards. Easily one of the best of 2006 across all genres. Music for the Soul - a great beauty for the ages Her voice is that of the earth and wind and fire. she does not sing, she breathes and diffuses soundwaves into the air and lifts the listener onto a floating cloud of sensory delight.
I hope she releases more albums soon. Until then, this album is essential- there are nuances to be discovered in every playing. Watching her sing live in clips on youtube is also an outerworld experience because her singing technique involves her whole body which moves like a silk, diaphonous gown, no matter what she is wearing. | | Andy Williams Million Seller Songs/To You Sweetheart, Aloha CD (2000)
Xiomara music CDs
$10.69 Collectables Records' two-fer Million Seller Songs/To You Sweetheart, Aloha combines two Andy Williams albums from the early '60s originally released on Cadence Records. Million Seller Songs, first issued in 1962 (not 1963 as the annotations state here), is a compilation album assembled after Williams had left Cadence for the greener fields of Columbia Records. Drawing from singles and from the LPs Two Time Winners, Lonely Street, Under Paris Skies, The Village of St. Bernadette, and Andy Williams Sings Steve Allen, it gathers together the singer's interpretations of songs that had million-selling singles for other artists, usually in the 1950s, such as "Twilight Time" (the Platters), "It's All in the Game" (Tommy Edwards), and "Love Letters in the Sand" (Pat Boone), though the Williams hits "Canadian Sunset" (a million seller for Hugo Winterhalter) and "Butterfly" (claimed in the liner notes as a Williams gold record, though never certified as such) are also included. One of the few Williams albums on Cadence not drawn upon for the set was To You Sweetheart, Aloha, which is probably why Collectables matched it with Million Seller Songs. Released in the wake of the success of Williams' 1958-1959 hit "The Hawaiian Wedding Song," it finds the singer trying ...
| | Billy Harper Somalia CD (1993)
Xiomara songs
$13.69 The passionate tenor saxophonist Billy Harper had not been heard on record as a leader in quite a few years when this superlative Evidence CD was released in 1995. Harper (who is joined by trumpeter Eddie Henderson, pianist Francesca Tanksley, bassist Louie Spears, and both Newman Taylor Baker and Horace Arnold on drums) brings back the spirit of John Coltrane, performing a very spiritual and generally intense set of music. The five originals are highlighted by the title cut, "Quest" and the nearly 22-minute "Thy Will Be Done." This CD contains some of Billy Harper's finest playing in years. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Abdullah Ibrahim African Sketchbook CD (1969)
Xiomara album
$12.19 African Sketchbook is a superb example of the kind of solo concerts Abdullah Ibrahim (then known as Dollar Brand) performed early in his career. They were lengthy, non-stop affairs with pieces strung together end on end, sometimes repeated, sometimes with interpolations from Monk or Ellington, and always supremely creative and moving. He would often introduce the evenings with a composition for flute, as is the case here with the gorgeous "Air." After that, it's wave upon wave of songs. Some are rhythmically propulsive numbers with Ibrahim vamping for all he's worth with the left hand while deftly evoking aspects of South Africa with the right. The songs tend to have a basis that may strike Western listeners as gospel-related while, in fact, it's gospel that shows these same African roots. Other pieces have tinges of 20th century ...

Xiomara CD music
$14.95 One of the top jazz cellists of the 1980s and 1990s, Hank Roberts performs eight of his spirited originals on this set which was his debut as a leader. Roberts, who also plays a bit of classical 12-string guitar and what is called a "jazz-a-phone fiddle" (a one-string violin that was modified so the sound came out of a tube put in his mouth), is joined by altoist Tim Berne; the trombones of Ray Anderson, Robin Eubanks and Dave Taylor; guitarist Bill Frisell; drummer Joey Baron; and (on one song) bassist Mark Dresser. The music is as eccentric as one would expect from this personnel and full of spirit, particularly ...
| | Cory Reese Silent Night CD (2006)
Xiomara music CDs
$17.69 Silent Night - Instrumental Music for the Christmas Season is the 2005 re-release of Cory Reese's classic Christmas album. The re-release features songs recorded on a rich Yamaha piano, the accompaniment of world-class musicians, and enhanced arrangements, making this Reese's most complex album to date. Cory Reese wasn’t exactly a child prodigy when it came to playing the piano. In fact, he never took a piano lesson in his life, and is still unable to read music. The family piano did more to collect dust than to fill the house with music during his childhood years. Reese grew up in Sandy, Utah, and was much more interested in playing sports than in sitting down at the piano. It wasn’t until the age of eighteen that he determined that he was going to teach himself how to play. After countless hours of learning how to play the music of other composers, he slowly began to write music himself. Five years later, he recorded his first CD, Moment of Peace, at Spiral Studios. Referred to as his “musical autobiography,” his record Moment of Peace is a chronicle of the young man’s life. Personal moments such as the anticipation of the birth of his child, and the death of his father are played through the notes of his music. In 2002, Reese released his second album of original music, Heart To Heart: Instrumental and Solo Piano, as well as a live CD recorded during a concert in southern Utah. The following year marked the release of his much-anticipated Christmas CD titled Silent Night: Instrumental Music For The Christmas Season. The CD contains arrangements of traditional Christmas songs as well as two original pieces. 2004 marked the release of Reese’s album, Witness, and is a spiritual testimony of what he holds to be true. The CD is comprised of solo piano arrangements of Christian hymns, as well as two original pieces. A bonus vocal track is included of Kenneth ...
