| | Brian Jonestown Massacre Space Girl & Other Favorites CD (1996)
Stories (Mini LP Sleeve) CD music
$12.39 A collection of early studio experiments from the archly named garage rock veterans Brian Jonestown Massacre. Jonestown leader Anthony Newcombe recorded the majority of these tracks during late-night solo sessions. The results are deliberately roughshod, feedback-drenched excursions into sneering, riff-driven noise rock. The 12-minute-long title track, which evokes the detuned guitar drone of early Sonic Youth and the incendiary noise of the Velvet Underground's WHITE LIGHT WHITE HEAT, is a particular standout.

| | Band CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Stories (Mini LP Sleeve) CD music
$25.89 Initially renowned as Bob Dylan's backing group, the Band emerged from the singer's shadow to proclaim a distinctive talent. Drawing upon a musical canon embracing soul, country, folk and rock `n' roll, the quintet created a unique sound that was quintessentially American. Its rustic qualities were enhanced by principle songwriter Robbie Robertson who created vistas suggestive of a pre-industrial age, and as such, captured the restlessness of the late 60s without the need for explicit manifestos. Expressive singing, sublime melodies and telepathic musicianship instils The Band with quality, but its adult themes and perspectives ensure an absolute timelessness. An all-time critics' favourite.
The Band's first album, Music from Big Pink, seemed to come out of nowhere, with its ramshackle musical blend and songs of rural tragedy. The Band, the group's second album, was a more deliberate and even more accomplished effort, partially because the players had become a more cohesive unit, and partially because guitarist Robbie Robertson had taken over the songwriting, writing or co-writing all 12 songs. Though ...

| | Gackt Love Letter CD (2008) (Import) Japan
Stories (Mini LP Sleeve) songs
$16.79 For Love Letter, Gackt decided to drop his usual spry, electric J-rock style in favor of an acoustic-only guitar album. Going unplugged is a big artistic challenge, and so is a commendable, but risky task -- and Gackt ultimately fails to floor it, mainly due to his overly straightforward approach to the job. Simply put, Love Letter is one long, slow, and dreamy acoustic ballad of the type that exhausted rockers like to close their records with to contrast the powerful riffs -- only this time there are no riffs, and all the songs consist of is Gackt's crooning over sparse guitar plucking or very simple piano chords; some strings may be added, but there's no rhythm section ...
