| | Gladys Knight Gold CD Gladys Knight Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
The consistently excellent two-disc GOLD series does it again with this superbly selected and compiled Gladys Knight and the Pips collection. The 39 tracks here stretch back to the group's early-'60s material, with cuts like "Every Beat of My Heart" and "Giving Up" hinting at both the Motown and doo-wop traditions. By the 1970s, the group had settled into a more smoothly soulful sound, complete with strings and horn arrangements.
That sound kicked off the string of hits the group is best known for, among them "Midnight Train to Georgia," "I've Got To Use My Imagination," and "Neither One of Us (Want to Be the First to Say Goodbye)." Those tracks are included here, of course, along with their '80s dance-oriented chart hits--"Save the Overtime (For Me);" "Love Overboard"--and some of Knight's solo releases from the late '80s and early '90s. The set offers a wonderful overview of the group's long career, with Knight's rich, expressive voice and the Pips' tight harmonies shining brightly throughout. Gold album
$14.75 Contains an untitled hidden track which follows "Jesus Gave Me Water."
Sam Cooke was a giant not just in the soul world, but in the larger scheme of American music. His melding of soul, gospel, and pop was as trenchant as it was revolutionary and influential. This unbeatable 30-song compilation touches on every aspect of this phenomenally gifted singer-songwriter's career. The romantic croon of "You Send Me" shares space with the mournful "Sad Mood," the romping "Twistin' the Night Away," and the moving social/spiritual statement "A Change Is Gonna Come" (this compilation is one of the rare collections to have this stirring and sought-after track). For pure fun, it's hard to beat the humor-filled "Another Saturday Night." Perhaps the master stroke, though, is ...
| | Essential Barry Manilow CDs (2005) Remastered
Gold CD music
$15.95 Even those who find Barry Manilow's music cringe-worthy are likely to know the chorus to "I Write the Songs," or to recognize the opening bars of "Mandy." That's because Manilow held serious sway over the pop and adult contemporary charts throughout the '70s, ratcheting up ...

| | Best Of Roberta Flack CD (2006)
Gold songs
$11.29 It's quite easy to place Roberta Flack near the top of the pile of singer/songwriters who changed the course of pop music, not only soul music, during the '70s. She was fortunate enough to deliver the velvet-smooth ballad "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to an unsuspecting public, and followed it up with an onslaught of ballads that would keep her on the charts for the remainder of the decade. From start to finish, this greatest-hits compilation is the most comprehensive look at her finest moments available on record. From her legendary string of duets with Donny Hathaway to her duets with Peabo Bryson and Maxi Priest that kept her at the top of the charts through the '80s, they're all here. But it's not just the duets that made Flack such an outstanding performer, as her solo works also rate high in quality. Free of the filler and goofy remixes that can make other greatest-hits collections seem diluted, this ...
| | Wilson Pickett Definitive Collection CDs (2006)
Gold album
$17.05 Equipped with a voice as suitable for the roadhouse as is for the lord's house, Wilson Pickett was of the finest performers in the history of soul music. The legendary singer has been the focus of many a hits comp through the years, but Rhino's 2006 double-disc DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, released shortly after the singer's death that same year, is perhaps the finest ...
| | Diana Ross All The Great Hits CD (1981) Remastered
Gold CD music
$10.59 Diana Ross is certainly a diva of goddess-like proportions. Whether joined by the Supremes, or out on her own, her voice is unmistakable and powerful, plus she possesses the uncanny ability to take songs penned by others and make them very much her own -- to imbibe them with her very soul. This collection of Ross' best-known and loved hits is perfect testament to her massive gift. Working closely with both singer/songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson, as well as producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (both of Chic), Ross brought six songs to the top of the pop charts over a decade -- all included here. From the early classic gospel-inflected "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)" and the empowering chest beater "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," to the lite soul of "It's My House," Ross demonstrates full range. Also ...

| | Sylvester Greatest Hits CDs (1983) (Import) Canada
Gold songs
$28.55 Disco queen Sylvester delivers 20 of her best on GREATEST HITS including "Body Strong" and "One Night Only."
With several outdated Sylvester collections on the market, this hard to find Canadian import is by far head and shoulders above the rest. For example, 1989's Original Hits unbelievably left off "Do You Wanna Funk," one of his signature hits, and other collections, such as 12 by 12, leave off "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)." Therefore, this Canadian collection stands as the definitive Sylvester hits package, containing the full-length versions of his dancefloor classics. Greatest Hits includes his three American ...
| | Ollie Halsall Caves CD (2000) (Import)
Gold album
$18.29 Guitarist Peter "Ollie" Halsall truly found himself at a low ebb when he recorded these multi-instrumental demos in 1979. Cancer had claimed old collaborator Mike Patto, the beloved frontman for their underrated prog rock band of the same name. Attempts at bottling heavy rock lightning with Boxer had met with similar indifference, while Halsall walked away from a short-lived stint in the Glitter Band with only a star-shaped guitar for his trouble. Halsall was reportedly subsisting without amenities like electricity and phone service, when he knocked out these songs on borrowed (!) equipment. His defiant eclectic streak nods to '50s rock ("Hey, Hey, Little Girl"), Bo Diddley-styled rave-ups ("Door to Door Daughter"), ...
