(2 Customer Reviews)
Although Alice Peacock's self-titled 2002 major-label album failed to make the singer-songwriter a household name, it ably displayed her considerable talent, often recalling pop/rock luminaries such as Shawn Colvin and Carole King. For Peacock's '06 self-released follow-up, WHO I AM, the vocalist/pianist offers up another winning set, but this time, as the title implies, she seems out to satisfy her own creative impulses over all else. The resulting tracks are ambitious, often with lush orchestral accompaniment, and highlight both Peacock's expressive voice and her graceful sense of songcraft, particularly on the spry "Baby Come Back" and the emotional "Here I Go Again." More soulful than Jewel and less slick than Sheryl Crow, Peacock should appeal to fans of these and the aforementioned artists, while assuredly maintaining her own identity.Dirty Linen (p.55) - "[Peacock] possesses a lovely, strong voice with a clean Midwestern accent that is perfect for articulating her finely crafted lyrics." Who I Am album
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), the jangly "Stray Paper," and the organ-smothered "Wait It Out."
Blessed with a voice reminiscent of a breathier Dusty Springfield, the native Texan has earned plenty of praise from her peers, resulting in a few ...
| | Miranda Lambert Kerosene CD (2005)
Who I Am CD music
$9.99 Many contestants on AMERICAN IDOL and similar TV shows go on to greater success, but due to their relative lack of experience, often have a hard time finding their niche. Not Miranda Lambert--when KEROSENE was released in 2005, the NASHVILLE STAR third-place winner was barely out of her teens, but she had already spent years honing her craft in bars. In addition to being a confident vocalist and strong-willed businessperson, Lambert is a crafty songwriter whose work is easily on par with that of Nashville veterans twice her age.
The title track is a pounding, attitude-filled country-rocker reminiscent of John Cougar Mellencamp's "Rain on the Scarecrow." (That this diminutive young blonde woman can spit out lines like "Trade the truth for a lie/Cheatin' ain't really a crime" so convincingly is also startling.) "I Can't Be Bothered" is straight-up honky-tonk, replete with whining steel guitar, Buck Owens-worthy ...
| | Kathleen Edwards Back To Me CD (2005)
Who I Am music CDs
$12.35 Kathleen Edwards excels at simple denim-and-leather country rock that recalls the best moments of Freedy Johnston and Lucinda Williams. Like these artists, Edwards writes mournful vignettes from the POV of down-at-the-heel small-town folks, with a rueful tenderness that suggests compassion beyond her years. Edwards sings in a pretty-yet-tomboyish voice that conveys longing, frustration, and often a vivifying redemption. Tom Petty sideman Benmont Tench and Sarah McLachlan's mentor Pierre Marchand help out on keyboards, while guitarist (and occasional co-writer) Colin Cripps provides tasteful leads that take flight when Edwards's vocals hover closer to the ground.
Edwards has a gift for writing choruses ...
| | Shelby Lynne Suit Yourself CD (2005)
Who I Am songs
$11.69 Shelby Lynne's 2003 album, IDENTITY CRISIS, was aptly named, as it saw Lynne move away from a big, lush, commercial radio-geared style to an earthier, stripped-down persona. SUIT YOURSELF takes this approach and runs with it, often sounding more like an impromptu late-night New York City singer/songwriter jam session ...
