A glance at the photo on Sara Hickman's The Motherlode hints at the ambition of the double album within: an explicit photo from the Kama Sutra is fronted by an ironing board (on fire) and a basket of clothes. These items form the themes of her albums, one about the heartache of domestic violence and drudgery, the other about the joys of sex and love. Hickman covers these 20 songs in a pleasant, contemporary folk style, relying on a lovely acoustic-based soundscape and her airy vocals. One conceptual problem with the first disc, however, is the fact that even while Hickman is singing about women being slaves to their husbands for the rest of their lives on the traditional "Wagoner's Lad," or complaining about life on a jagged edge on "Living in Quiet Desperation," it all sounds, musically, rather pleasant. Desperation, it seems, should sound desperate. This is the same problem Sarah McLachlan has occasionally had, offering heart-rending songs that make one want to happily singalong. This lack of pathos doesn't mean the music is a failure, only that it misses its intended mark. It also means that the second, happier disc, does a better job integrating music and lyrics. The "Birdhouse" reminds one of Joni Mitchell at her most expansive in the mid-'70s, with a thick bass underpinning this lovely song. The arrangements, as with the horns on "Two Days Today," add considerably to the joyful mood. For Hickman aficionados, lovers of women's music, and political folkies, The Motherlode, with nearly an hour-and-a-half of music, will be a real treat. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Motherlode album
$19.49 Though George Harrison's solo albums for most of the 1970s and early '80s were uneven, often slapdash affairs, 1970's ALL THINGS MUST PASS is a brilliant piece of work. Produced by Phil Spector, whose expansive, majestic arrangements and sonic flourishes suit Harrison's songs perfectly, ALL THINGS MUST PASS eclipses everything the other Beatles recorded at the time (excepting John Lennon's PLASTIC ONO BAND). This sprawling double record gives the impression of Harrison being uncorked and pouring forth all of the songs and ideas edged out by Lennon and McCartney during the Beatles years.
The title and the melancholic black and white cover photo match the mood of the music, which brims with an armchair wisdom, and the weary, disillusioned air that permeated the early '70s in the counter-cultural ...

$6.15 CHICAGO II remains a classic album, encapsulating its time (1969) in all its tumult and glory. The Vietnam War (and the civil unrest it inspired) was still raging, the counterculture dream had not yet crashed and burned, and rock music could be taken seriously as an "art form" while still generating radio hits. Chicago, with their then-new fusion of jazz, rock, and pop, rose high on the charts, while taken seriously both in and beyond the rock-critic establishment. (Some jazz listeners respected and enjoyed Chicago as well.) Their approach had a freshness and vibrancy--"25 Or 6 To 4" was surging, dramatic, and slightly ominous; "Fancy Colours" and "Make Me Smile" were full of soulful optimism; a four-movement suite showed the band had ambition beyond the three- or four-minute pop song. To paraphrase one of Chicago's song titles, it was only the beginning.
In some ways the first real Chicago album (1969's self-titled CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY ...

In the notes in To: Elliott From: Portland, Expunged Records president Anthony Davis writes, "Elliott Smith was someone who told your sad story and made you feel like you were not alone." With this in mind, Davis set out to release a tribute album to the late singer, featuring covers from other Portland musicians (the city that Smith called home) with whom Smith's distinct, fragile style resonated ...
