And the unearthing of various psychedelic-era obscurities continues. In this case, the chosen representatives -- reflecting turn of the century interest in a comparatively little-known Latin American '60s scene -- were from Venezuela; a teenage trio signed for a three-album contract that only recorded the one in 1968. The sparse liner notes indicate that it was pretty much the band's standard set, and as such, reveals that they were essentially a cover group with a fondness for soul -- the sole original, "Gonna Ride," kicks things off. It's actually a surprisingly blasting number once it hits the chorus, guitarist Alvaro Falcon going certifiably crazy via overdubs (in interesting contrast, the band's also good at simply cutting out fully for dramatic pauses). Bassist/singer Jesus Toro's slight accent tinges an otherwise standard-enough rock/blues delivery of the time, while the whole song ends on a wonderfully bemusing let-the-tape-slow-down note. After that, it's a reasonably standard selection in terms of musicians to reinterpret, though with admittedly sometimes intriguing song choices as representatives. Billy Price, east coast blue-eyed soul man, has been entertaining audiences for the past three decades. In his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa., he is an institution. Price's popularity isn't hard to explain. As Geoffrey Himes of the Washington Post has written, "Unlike so many blues revivalists, Price is not an imitation of older, better singers--he's the real thing." Billy Price first attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan. Price is the vocalist on two of Buchanan's LPs, That's What I'm Here For and Livestock. With Buchanan, Price toured the U.S. and Canada, playing such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Newport Jazz Festival, the Roxy and the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Malford Milligan has been belting out his own blend of blues, soul, gospel, funk, and rock & roll from his home base of Austin, TX, for many years, working and recording with a lengthy roster of talent that includes Storyville, Double Trouble, the Boneshakers, Eric Johnson, Sue Foley, and Marcia Ball. Milligan, whose influences range from Joni Mitchell to Al Green and Stevie Wonder, didn't begin releasing albums under his own name until well after he had passed the age of 40. His rendition of Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night" set the tone for the album The Gospel According to Austin, Vol. 2 in 2001. Sweet Cherry Soul appeared in 2002 on Stagger Lee Records, No Good Deed Goes Unpunished came out on the Austin to Boston label in 2004, and Rides Again... was released by Mass Appeal in 2006. Rides Again... might just be his best piece of work to date, as maturity gives Malford a leonine quality that works wonders and is bound to make him even more exciting and unique with the passage of time. Stoked with original tunes and new renditions of favorites by Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, Freddie King and Merle Haggard (as well as a cover of "Drive" by the Cars that brings to mind the passion of Eric Burdon), this album of contemporary Texas-styled entertainments illustrates just how perfectly all of the inspirations meet and combine in the king-sized heart of this joyously driven individual. ~ arwulf arwulf

It's too bad the otherwise thorough liner notes don't admit to exactly what releases these 13 tracks first appeared upon, or give any songwriting credits. The title is accurate as far as it goes, though, in that these are early Preston sides from the mid-1960s featuring his organ. All of them are instrumental, so they're not too much in line with the vocal soul material he did after reaching fame as a solo artist. If you're looking for instrumental organ '60s soul with dashes of rock, jazz, and gospel, Preston was one of the best at his game, concocting joyful swirls and unpredictable trills that do much to make the basic R&B material swing. What keeps this from being in the same league as, say, Booker T. & the MG's is the pedestrian nature of that material, which usually sticks to standard R&B progressions, and doesn't do much to redefine the familiar cover tunes, like "Slippin' & Slidin'" and "Shotgun."
