Set in New York and New Jersey during the Great Depression, this is the true story of heavyweight boxer Jim Braddock. After his boxing career hits rock bottom, Jim struggles to make ends meet by taking odd jobs at the dock. When a fortuitous chain of events lands Jim back in the ring for a sceond chance, he makes the most of it by regaining his championship form. Cast: Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, Paul Giamatti. Director Ron Howard and star Russell Crowe re-team after their Oscar-winning collaboration, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, for this rousing biopic. It's the true story of boxer James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), a heavyweight contender from New Jersey nicknamed "the Bulldog of Bergen," who lost his fame and fortune during the Great Depression only to win the hearts of the downtrodden during a spectacular comeback. Crowe is masterful as Braddock, with Renee Zellweger playing his wife, and Paul Giamatti as his loyal friend and manager, Joe Gould. The sharply observed script devotes a significant amount of screen time to the domestic struggles of Braddock's family; developing character and place with a wealth of period detail, so when the comeback starts, the payoff is enormous. The matches themselves are unforgettable: raw, intense, riveting, with more than a passing stylistic nod to Martin Scorsese's groundbreaking 1980 film, RAGING BULL. Though it may sound a bit formulaic, one should remember that this is the true and "original" underdog boxer story from which all others hail, and it's riveted together with true craftsmanship. Howard has a real skill for plucking audience members' heartstrings, and the performances are first-rate. Giamatti and Crowe play off each other in a rapport perfectly suited to their roles, especially at the ring, where the one's manic intensity makes a perfect contrast to the other's warrior grace. Theatrical Release: June 3, 2005 Cinderella Man Reviews: "Imbuing his Braddock with uncommon dignity and integrity, Crowe creates an utterly human character..."
-- Ali Jaafar, Sight and Sound "Russell Crowe is rugged and resilient....It's a solid picture..."
-- Tom Charity, Uncut Ranked #6 in Rolling Stone's "Top 25 DVDs Of 2005' -- "If there's any justice, DVD will rescue this rousing drama from shocking box-office indifference."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "[An] emotional true story....This is a good soundtrack that works well with the story."
-- Widescreen Review Staff, Widescreen Review "The film is RAGING BULL minus the rage, though with a motivation that's at least as involving, and a lot more surprising."Wall Street Journal "[T]here's not another actor working in the movies today with Crowe's kind of gravitational pull to authenticity..."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "Out of the ring and opposite Mr. Giamatti, Mr. Crowe eases into the boxer's soft side, at times beautifully; in the ring, he's repulsively believable."-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times "The climactic matchup works splendidly for two reasons. There's so much on the line, and the staging is breathtaking..."-- Mike Clark, USA Today "Crowe's physical acting is miraculous....A top-notch entertainment and as fine a sports movie as one could hope for."

Great film DISAPPOINTING DVD PACKAGE!!! As a fan of Russell?s for over 7 years now I was really looking forward to this film.
I was NOT disappointed. Great film, he & Ron Howard did great jobs.
WHAT I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT:
As a film & DVD fan I would have preferred to purchase the collectors DVD set for the film but I could not, so I had to settle for this version of the film.
When I opened up the package, expecting to find the sheet with the chapter stops listed, bonus features, information about the film, what did I find instead? AN OPEN UP, 4 PAGE ADVERTISEMENT FOR KODAK!!
MY WORD!! WHO MADE THE DECISION TO PUT THIS IN THE DVD PACKAGE INSTEAD OF INFORMATION ON THE FILM OR THE DVD?
The makers of this DVD package should be ashamed of themselves for putting this film out in this condition.
If I want information about Kodak or it?s products A DVD PACKAGE FOR A FILM IS NOT WHERE I WANT TO FIND IT!!!!!!
Bad job Universal & Kodak!!!!!!!

Cinderella Man review
$39.09 Based on actual diary accounts of several teenagers following the L.A. riots, FREEDOM WRITERS is the story of an idealistic teacher's attempts to make a difference in the lives of her at-risk students. Located in gang-ravaged Long Beach, California, Woodrow Wilson High is a hotbed of violence due to a voluntary integration program which brings Black, Latino, Asian, and White students together. Rather than having the desired effect of creating healthy diversity, this program breeds constant war between all parties involved, the result being daily gun shots, constant racial slurs, and gang violence.
Played largely by young unknowns, the freshman class in question is both naïve and wise beyond its years. While never having heard of the Holocaust, these kids are well-versed in the pain of poverty, the legal system, and death. Despite being up against unthinkable violence, devoted first-time teacher Erin Gruwell (Hillary Swank) never gives up, slowly bonding with her class of at-first unreachable pupils, breaking down their tough exteriors and getting at the real people beneath through requiring the students keep daily journals. Meanwhile, a strain is put on Erin's marriage as her student involvement gradually takes priority over her personal life. The intensity with which Erin relates to her work threatens her husband (Patrick Dempsey), who in seeing Erin's transformation, is reminded of his own stagnancy. Thanks to a catalogue of films including STAND AND DELIVER and DANGEROUS MINDS, any film about inspiring teachers risks feeling redundant and preachy. But writer/director Richard LaGravenese manages to put a fresh spin on this already familiar formula thanks to powerful performances by Hillary Swank, Imelda Staunton, and several newcomers. While slightly predictable, FREEDOM WRITERS critiques the public education system in an ultimately moving way.
