| | Allison Moorer Getting Somewhere CD Allison Moorer Discography of CDs
On her second album for the Sugar Hill label, singer-songwriter Allison Moorer offers up another strong set of (largely) self-penned tunes. Like her genre-defying older sister, Shelby Lynne, Moorer is intent on straying from her country roots while still keeping them in the fold. This subtle stylistic tweaking is best heard on "Fairweather," co-written with GETTING SOMEWHERE's producer, Steve Earle, who expertly brings out the pop/rock elements in these 10 songs.

Spin (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] set of punchy roots pop whose backbeat thumps as hard as her still-wounded heart." No Depression (p.113) - "She has always led with her voice, her phrasing, her careful diction, and her depth of feeling, rooted in life experiences that might have disabled a lesser character." Getting Somewhere album
$12.39 Once upon a time, Allison Moorer was a country artist who sang for a major record label. It might be easy then, to see her switch to Sugar Hill as a back-to-the-basics move, a reconnection with her country roots. Moorer, however, isn't that predictable, and The Duel -- while many things -- isn't country. In fact, the opening cut -- "I Ain't Giving Up on You" -- sounds a lot like classic rock and most of the album follows this course. This is interesting, in that Moorer's a strong writer, and it would've been easy to fall back on a tasteful country-folk production and become a fairly typical singer/songwriter. Instead, Moorer's plucky vocals, along with Adam Landry's electric guitar work and R.S. Field's steady backbeat, turn a song like "Melancholy Polly" into an easy-rolling romp. Another factor that makes the songs on The Duel so effective is that Moorer, besides being good at penning lyrics, is smart enough to write catchy hooks. This means that the listener doesn't have to be into the lyrics of "When Will You Ever Come Down" to enjoy the intriguing chord progressions. ...
| | Tift Merritt Tambourine CD (2004)
Getting Somewhere CD music
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), the jangly "Stray Paper," and the organ-smothered "Wait It Out."
Blessed with a voice reminiscent of a breathier Dusty Springfield, the native Texan has earned plenty of praise from her peers, resulting in a few noteworthy guests popping up on this outing. Pedal-steel ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
Getting Somewhere music CDs
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain ...

| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
Getting Somewhere album
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her angel-on-morphine voice. As an album, it is her most consistent and appealing since 1998's CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
Williams's seemingly odd choice to work with mainstream pop producer Hal Willner works wonderfully. Willner built the album up from Williams's demo recordings, keeping her original ...
