| | Peter White Good Day CD (2009)
Essential CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War II). Of course, one doesn't necessarily rule out the another; the late saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. knew how to be commercial and adventurous at the same time, but most smooth jazz artists play it way too safe -- which is what White usually does on Good Day. This 2009 release is, on the whole, an album of pleasant but not very memorable background music; White usually ...

| | Christmas At Rao's: A Celebration Of Family, Friends, & Holiday Spirit CD (2001)
Essential songs
$6.09 A collection of some of the coolest Italian-male vocalists crooning Christmas chestnuts, Christmas at Rao's is a serviceable holiday collection, for better or worse (depending on your mood) overly focused on now-forgotten standards. Highlights include some interesting nuggets like Tony Bennett's ...

| | Dave Alvin Blue BLVD. CD (1991)
Essential music CDs
$11.39 Dave Alvin's second release is a bit more relaxed and confident than his debut (ROMEO'S ESCAPE). He still sings about heartbreak, loneliness and the small sad dramas of the working class with the vision of a short story writer (an actual interest which bore fruit in his 1996 book of prose and poetry, Any Rough Times Are Now Behind You). Besides the compelling title song, this set also marks the first appearance of "Guilty Man" (later to become the name of his touring band) and his version of "Haley's Comet," co-written with Tom Russell, who also recorded this tale of Bill Haley's sad decline and death. From the balladry of "Why Did She Stay With Him" and "Dry River" to the roadhouse pummel of "Wanda And Duane," this album breathes with palpable emotion, but is also not afraid to rock hard.
Personnel: Dave Alvin (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Greg Leisz (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, steel guitar, lap steel guitar); Lee Allen (saxophone); ...
| | Smog Rain On Lens CD (2001)
Essential songs
$13.05 On RAIN ON LENS, Bill Callahan, under the moniker Smog, deviates from his lo-fi, rough 4-track production in favor of a cleaner, fuller studio sound. In addition to his usual acoustic guitar, singer and songwriter Callahan employs a larger array of musicians and instruments this time, including flute, violin, and oboe, thus both augmenting and lightening Smog's dark, brooding sound at once. However, espite this whole crew of talented musicians (including Rick Rizzo of Eleventh Dream Day and Pat Sampson of US Maple), what isn't lost is Callahan's signature baritone voice weighted with his melancholy alt-country ...
| | Paul Anka Best Selection CD (2002) Japan
Essential album
$32.39 BMG International's Best Selection features 11 tracks apiece from two of the preeminent teen idols of the '50s and early '60s, Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka. Despite the fact that these combined greatest-hits collections are usually small and don't feature many essential tracks from either of the artists, this compilation is actually pretty good, offering an ample amount of essential songs from both Anka and Sedaka. "Diana," "Lonely Boy," "Puppy Love," and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" represent Anka's career highlights, while ...

Essential album
$13.69 Often referred to as hip-hop's "nomadic wanderer," Ithaka's "live it - write it - rap about it" style appeals at the most basic hip-hop level. Ithaka takes the listener on a musical journey incorporating basic yet insightful lyrics and driving rhythms with distinct cultural flavor.Born in California, Ithaka, also known as Darin Pappas, is an avid surfer and world-renowned sculptor whose travels have taken him from East Africa to Mexico to Portugal to Brazil. Ithaka's most recent album, Recorded In Rio, is a major departure from his 2001 album, Somewhere South Of Somalia. The lyrics for Recorded In Rio were scribed during a period of years, not months as was the Somalia album, and mirror the life of the artist from when he left Portugal in 1998 and returned to the US. From down and out episodes of middle-class poverty to surviving a Category 5 hurricane, Ithaka addresses a wide variety of subject matter ranging from tyrant employers, questionable government policies, drunk driving, absent parents, drug addicts, and real love to chaotic public transportation.Ithaka's first three albums, Flowers And The Color Of Paint , Stellafly and Somewhere South Of Somalia were released commercially in Portugal, each having significant success by Portuguese standards. "Escape From The City Of Angels," off of Flowers And The Color Of Paint, was included in the feature film, "The Replacement Killers" and ...
