| | Tord Gustavsen Changing Places CD (2003)
Tickle Toe CD music
$14.59 This release signals in the then 33-year old, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut outing for the ECM Records label. His fellow compatriots, bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, round out this jazz piano trio offering. Fundamentally speaking, the group seemingly works its palate into that ...

| | Doc Severinsen Brand New Thing CD (1977)
Tickle Toe album
$9.44 Here is an overlooked gem from a most unlikely source, recorded in a most unlikely genre -- commercial '70s jazz/funk -- just as the disco era was gathering steam. Tom Scott controlled the production, with Severinsen overdubbing all of the brass choruses and occasionally passing his horns through a phase shifter and wah-wah pedal. The coterie of overworked sessionmen from L.A. and NYC -- Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Lee Ritenour, Anthony Jackson, Ralph MacDonald, etc. -- work this session as you would expect, with the danceable beat always in mind. Yet they pulled off a great, thoroughly musical record because ...
| | Peter White Glow CD (2001)
Tickle Toe CD music
$7.59 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. The original material is unmemorable, and even such familiar titles as "Just My Imagination" and "Who's That Lady" stretch into one- or two-chord vamps that serve as broad thoroughfares ...
| | Don Gibson Singer -- The Songwriter: 1961-1966 CDs (1994) (Import) Import; Boxed Set; Germany
Tickle Toe music CDs
$105.75 This is an absolutely stunning collection of essential Don Gibson material from his greatest years as both a songwriter and as a recording artist. Germany's Bear Family label has assembled four discs containing a total of 122 performances with many alternate takes, B-sides and previously unissued recordings. Some of the folks who performed with Gibson on these sides were arranger Danny Davis, the Anita Kerr Singers, Floyd Cramer, the Jordanaires, Pete Drake, Chet Atkins, Roy Huskey Jr., Grady Martin, Herman Wade, and many more. This is countrypolitan at its best. These were golden years for country music as pop, and Gibson rode the charts like a lion at the beginning ...
| | 451, Matt Jorgensen + Road Begins Here CD (2001)
Tickle Toe songs
$14.69 This, the debut album from Matt Jorgensen as a bandleader, is something to be heard. Within, he sets out with a trio of Seattle-based players (Marc Seales on organ rather than his usual piano, Phil Sparks on bass, and Rob Davis on sax) to run through works from the greats of post-bop jazz (Miles, Trane) and a number of their own compositions, as well as a stray Zeppelin number that works incredibly well converted into a space-filled jazz piece. Each of the players adds something to the recording. Davis' sax alternately squeaks and squawks through a solo and holds up tight melodic lines in the main passages. Jorgensen keeps the rhythm throughout, but also adds a flair to the proceedings in the spaces between other performers (as well as his own solos). Sparks provides able backing and a touch of fantasy in his solos, and Seales remains largely in the background ...

$12.29 Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble: Darius Savage (double bass); Steve Berry , Ernest Dawkins, Maurice Brown , Isaiah Spencer.
Alto and tenor saxophonist Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble is constantly full of surprises on Mean Ameen, a tribute to the late trumpeter Ameen Muhammad. While "3-D" is a bit reminiscent of the free bop of Ornette Coleman's Free ...
| | Chris Connor CD (1956) (Import) United Kingdom
Tickle Toe songs
$11.79 Chris Connor's classic self-titled album returns as a part of the Jazz Masters Series. Among the 12 tracks are the hits "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Anything Goes."
CHRIS CONNOR was the quintessential '50s jazz vocalist Chris Connor's 1956 debut for Atlantic after a two-year stint on the short-lived California label Bethlehem. Like 1954's SINGS LULLABY OF BIRDLAND, her very first LP, CHRIS CONNOR is somewhat schizophrenically divided between rhapsodic ballads and boisterous uptempo numbers, perhaps reflecting different sessions with different personnel. But, as with the previous album, the ballads win the day. Her versions here of Billy Strayhorn's "Something To Live For," the penned-for-Sinatra "Where Are You," and the folk-like "When The Wind Was Green" once again reveal Connor's mastery of strong, forthright ballad singing. On second thought, her moderately swinging takes on Cole Porter's "I Get A Kick ...
