A one-off project of such extraordinary depth it's a crime no sequel materialized. This regrouping of Japan under a Southwest noir name eclipses the majority of the band's fine back catalog. RAIN TREE CROW is hallucinogenic, surreal, mysterious, yet powerful. The vignettes herein tell tales of isolated desert regions pockmarked by loneliness and climatic upheaval, of landscapes barren save for the husks of rusty car skeletons and cattle skulls.
Multi-instrumentalist/vocalist David Sylvian, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, percussionist Steve Jansen and bassist Mick Karn are some of the most adroit musicians in modern music. These moments of brittle rock, fractured "progressive" blues, and supple experimentation remain wholly unique. Restrained yet inventive songscapes such as the beautiful "Pocket Full of Change" and "Every Colour You Are" are balanced against evocative instrumentals such as "Red Earth." Sylvian's rich baritone is given free expressive reign in compositions rich with somber, sienna-toned electronics, forlorn guitars, delicate percussive accents, and basslines stretched tight across parched gulches. Immerse yourself.

Rain Tree Crow includes: David Sylvian (vocals); Steven Jansen (guitar).

Purchase Rain Tree Crow CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Fripp First Day CD (1993)
Rain Tree Crow album
$12.05 The pooling of Sylvian's silken vocals--not to mention his multi-instrumental talents--with the fiery dexterity of Fripp gave all indications of a marriage made in progressive heaven. THE FIRST DAY takes some time to gel, but it's worth the wait. Fripp lays down some of his most scorching licks in ages, running through a broad synopsis of his guitar phrasings--burning RED-era blast-offs, contrapuntal DISCIPLINE-era inclinations, and stormy tides of distortion, tension, and release--sometimes all in the space of a single track (witness the 17-minute progressive funk of "Darshan").
Furthermore, Sylvian ...
| | Jerry Garcia Shady Grove CD (1996)
Rain Tree Crow CD music
$16.69 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Longtime friends Jerry Garcia and David Grisman spent much of the early '90s working together on acoustic recordings of folk, country and bluegrass tunes. After Garcia's death in 1995, Grisman decided to begin releasing the prodigious backlog of music the two had accumulated, with each release covering a different genre of American music. The first, SHADY GROVE, concentrates on the folk and bluegrass that was one of their first musical loves.
This music is rich in history, encompassing everything from an Appalachian folk song (the title tune) to a Civil War ballad ("The Sweet Sunny South"). Garcia's warm, weathered vocals are handily supported by his and Grisman's nimble picking (on guitar, mandolin, ...

| | Northern Pikes Hits & Assorted Secrets: 1984-1993 CD (1999)
Rain Tree Crow CD music
$14.89 This remarkably comprehensive best-of package from Saskatchewan's Northern Pikes sums up their seven-year career adeptly, thoroughly including every one of their hits as well as some of the lesser-known but equally important ones. There are three unreleased tunes sandwiched between the more popular numbers that stand up well, along with live versions of "Unimportant" and "Dancing in a Dance Club" from 1993's Gig album. Standouts throughout this set include the chord-crunching "Dream Away," re-mixed and sounding better than the original, and their most heartfelt rock song, "Believe," from 1992's Neptune. This is also the easiest place to get gems like "Kiss Me You Fool" and "Place That's Insane" or album versions of "She Ain't Pretty" and "Girl With a Problem." Both Jay Semko and Bryan Potvin take turns singing lead in this band, culminating a pleasant blend of sheer and gritty vocals. The Northern Pikes' sound teeters back and forth from wild, flyaway guitar outbursts to fine, ...

| | Terry Callier New Folk Sound CD (1964)
Rain Tree Crow songs
$12.49 Nowadays, people know different. But when Terry Callier's first album sneaked out to little fanfare in the mid '60s, he was still Chicago's best-kept secret. It would be some time before he had an opportunity to fully exploit his soul and jazz influences. Callier's youthful voice, backed sympathetically here by his acoustic guitar plus two basses, was a strikingly androgynous instrument--sounding like a smooth, steady Nina Simone minus the simmering anger.
Over eight songs, four of them traditional, Callier's relaxed air belies his tender years. His calm presence turns the yearning "900 Miles" into a thing of haunting beauty. Selections such as "Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be" and "Cotton Eyed Joe" are the real oddities, however, even in the remarkably varied Callier canon. Certainly the riff-driven "It's About Time" shows its teeth, a warm-hearted plea for peace more familiar to Callier converts. In hindsight, THE NEW FOLK SOUND doesn't look unhappy in the company of early Buckley, Hardin, et al. On its own merits, there is much more than mere curiosity value to recommend it. False starts are rarely so engaging.
The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier was not released until 1968, about three years after the project was originally completed; while the long delay almost certainly crippled the momentum of Callier's fledgling career, the impact on the music itself was at most minimal -- while not the singer's best album, it's his most timeless and inviting, adhering closely to the folk stylings addressed by the title while largely ignoring the mystical jazz dimensions that texture his later material. Surprisingly, none of the album's eight songs are originals, relying instead on traditional tunes like "900 Miles" and "Cotton Eyed Joe"; while Callier's spiralling acoustic guitar lines and the use of two bassists (Terbour Attenborough and John Tweedle) reflect his admiration of John Coltrane, New Folk Sound is for the most part stark and simple, possessed of a subtle grace that spotlights his remarkably moving vocals to excellent effect -- it's a debut that holds all the promise fulfilled by his classic recordings for Cadet. [The 2003 CD adds three previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded on the same day as the session that yielded the original LP, including the traditional tunes "Be My Woman" and "Jack o' Diamonds," as well as Judy Collins' adaptation of William Butler Yeats' "The Golden Apples of the Sun."] ~ Jason Ankeny

| | Throw Rag Desert Shores CD (2003)
Rain Tree Crow album
$11.65 Throw Rag's approach to punk rock is refreshing and yet still time-honored. "Space Hump Me" has a lot of early-'70s punk in it, particularly with the sneering vocals and simple arrangement such as the Damned. Lead singer Captain Sean-Doe never lets loose as the song is wild but still quite tight, much like "Hollywood," which appears later. "Hang Up" continues the party rock atmosphere as more guitars are brought to the fore. However, they mix rockabilly and punk beautifully, especially on "Rule Maker," a tune that could easily be on a Social Distortion album. Performing what they dubbed "sailor rock," "Mission's Message" is the first track that sounds ordinary ...
