World Asylum album
$9.39 Dutch originals the Gathering have built a rabid following over the years, meaning there's every reason to justify a release such as 2005's Accessories: Rarities & B-Sides, which compiles a total of 27 non-album cuts from all stages of the group's remarkably consistent career. However, even the greatest of the band's B-sides, outtakes, and leftovers are still just that: secondary, possibly even substandard goods -- meaning that protracted exposure to a full two discs' worth of them could leave even the most devout followers a little disappointed. Just a warning. Now to the contents: disc one focuses ...

$13.75 For metalheads, the early to mid-2000s went down in history as a time in which the United States dominated metalcore, hardcore, and screamo while Europe dominated the death metal/black metal field as well as the power metal revival/progressive metal scene. And Europe was equally dominant when it came to goth metal; if, in the early to mid-2000s, one came across a metal band that had strong goth leanings, a definite Lacuna Coil influence, and a female lead singer with an ethereal vocal style, it wasn't necessarily a European band but was likely a European band. Germany's Eyes of Eden, in fact, fit that description ...

World Asylum songs
$12.19 As Wave Music has staked its flag in house (and dub) territory, when the label announced King Britt was compiling the fourth in its popular Deep and Sexy series of mix compilations, fans knew the eclectic DJ/producer would craft a house-based set with a difference. And, of course, they were right. Not content to merely select the songs (drawn exclusively from Wave Music's own canon) and seamlessly remix them, Britt interjected synthesized guitar and a clutch of vocalists into the mix, as well as his own loops and edits. Britt sets this passionate affair into action with Onda's "Waiting for Your Love," a breezy charmer of a song that immediately catches your ear and sends your heart racing with the potential of love. Things begin to heat up with Abstract Truth's track, its jazzy "Get Another Plan [Trumpet Jam]" stoking the fires. "Live My Life" further inflames the grooves, while the intricate rhythms that play across "People from the Sun and the Earth" broadly hint at the equally intricate dance of love. At this point, King Britt kicks the set up a notch, quickening the tempo and the intensity as passion ignites, before he sends listeners into a state of ecstasy with AlphaMotive's trippy, trancey "The Light." No wonder Lisa Shaw sings out "You're still the one, you take my breath away," on "Love for You," the set's sole new number. Getting down and dirty with Lascivious, this sweet ride comes to an end with Blue Six's indeed "Sweeter Love." This is a sensuous journey through a global tunnel of love, as King Britt glides across soul, jazz, Latin, deep house, and even trance. With so many songs born anew and the set full of subtle nuances, this compilation is the ultimate night of passion. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Deep & Sexy 4, is a house music dream built for flirtatious moments on dance floors around the globe. Not one to limit this to just creating a mix for a renowned label, King took the opportunity to challenge himself. Using Ableton Live 6 software, this compilation is as much a unique studio album as it is a scenic compilation of tracks. 'First I picked all the songs that I wanted in the mix, then I culled them down to ones that may be pieced together to create a completely new track. I made three turntable tracks which would be as if I was DJing. I also made a track of all my re-edits and loops, as well as a track of acapella and samples. In LIVE 6 I put them all together using production techniques rather than only mixing records. I really loved mixing this way.' - King BrittIt works perfectly. Beginning with Onda's 'Waiting For Love', which is laced with saucy guitar riffs that compliment the sparse melodic lyrics, then flowing perfectly through Tom & Joyce's 'Vai Minha Tristeza'. With a tambourine accenting the bass lines, and the introduction to the saxophone as it hits mid way, you know you are on a deep house groove that softly picks you up and demands your hips to move along. King's ear for groove-heavy, high-hat hitting music is showcased throughout the mix, and is most apparent when Abstract Truth 'Get Another Plan' (Trumpet Jam) starts peeking through. This track sets the pace for the rest of the mix, and is the perfect house tune with its up-and-down bass line and soaring trumpet, which sings to the listener's mood. Under the Scuba moniker, King co-wrote and produced 'Love For You' as an exclusive single for the compilation. Naked Music's Lisa Shaw sings with unmistakable voice that is nothing short of meltingly ...
| | Arch Enemy Black Earth CD (1996) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Sweden
World Asylum album
$13.89 This Japanese edition has 11 songs, including two bonus tracks: "Losing Faith" and "The Ides of March."
Reissues can be quite revealing when a band has been around for a decade or more. A reissue might demonstrate that a band's sound has pretty much stayed the same over the years, or it might make the listener say, "You know, this band has done a lot of evolving since this album was recorded." Arch Enemy's debut album, Black Earth (which was recorded in 1996 and reissued in the United States by Regain in 2007), is definitely an example of the latter. Between 1996 and 2007, Arch Enemy experienced some lineup changes, and their approach became increasingly polished along the way. That isn't to say that Black Earth is not well played or short on chops, only that Arch Enemy favored more rawness in the beginning. Arch Enemy's 1996 lineup -- Michael and Christopher Amott on guitar, Johan Liiva on lead vocals and bass, and Daniel Erlandsson on drums -- keeps the slickness to a minimum on bare-knuckles thrash metal/death metal scorchers like "Idolatress," ...
