(2 Customer Reviews)
On their debut album CIVILIAN, British band Boy Kill Boy offers up a collection of retro dance-rock with a moody edge. The Killers are a big influence here, as is Interpol. Chris Peck's vocals sail easily over the staccato rhythms and neo-New Wave guitars and synths, and the singer is especially gripping on the disc's few slow burners. This is an album of shimmering rock with a driving energy, a confident album by a confident young band.
London quartet Boy Kill Boy debut full length. This band are widely tipped to be one of 2006's biggest breakthroughs - a band that has already graced Top Of the Pops, Radio 1 playlists and are headlining the NME New Bands tour around the release. "It's not so much a case of 'most likely to'. Boy Kill Boy are being talked about as rock's 'most definitely going to'. - NME

Q (p.116) - Ranked #97 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006." Alternative Press (p.210) - "[T]he London quartet ooze undeniable confidence in their strident riffs and bigger-than-life choruses." Excellent 80's sounding aka The Killers, and The Bravery! I picked up this excellent 80's pop new wave sounding cd by Britain's Boy Kill Boy and it can be best compared to The Killer's "Hot Fuss", Hard Fi's Stars of SSTV" and The Bravery's self titled cd. Melodic new wave pop at it's best. Standouts include Back Again, On and On, Suzie, On My Own, Civil Sin, Killer, Friday-Friday - oh heck they're all good songs! Pick it up you won't be disappointed. Civilian music CDs
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.

| | Freedy Johnston Can You Fly CD (1992)
Civilian songs
$13.29 Freedy Johnston's second album is the one that brought him to the attention of the world at large. A mere two years later, the somewhat callow alt-rock of his debut is transformed into a rich tapestry with tinges of folk, country, and power-pop. Johnston's lyrics take a giant step forward as well. Their slightly elliptical quality seems poetic rather than vague. The subtle twists of the arrangements and the undeniably catchy melodies and riffs of many of the songs bespeak an advancement of melodic sensibility as well. Freedy's artistic progress paid off, as respected critics tripped over themselves to praise CAN YOU FLY to the heavens.
As on much of his subsequent material, there's a distinctly downcast sentiment at work here. The bleakly poignant "Tearing Down This Place" views the destruction of a relationship through the metaphor of a building's demolition. The gorgeous ballad "Down In Love," ...

| | Sinead O'Connor She Who Dwells In The Secret Place Of The Most High Shall Abide Under The Shadow Of The Almighty CDs (2003)
Civilian music CDs
$19.75 DISC 2 was recorded live at The Directv Freeview Concert, Dublin, Ireland, in October 2002.
She Who Dwells in the Secret Place of the Most High Shall Abide Under the Shadow of the Almighty (yeah, it's a mouthful, but at least it's not Fiona Apple's monolith), was reportedly Sinead O' Connor's final album -- it wasn't -- as she seeks another way of life as a spiritual pilgrim, O'Connor delved deep into her rare, B-side, unreleased, and compilation tracks and gives listeners a live album to boot over two discs. Released stateside on Vanguard, this is, despite its disparate nature, one of the most satisfying recordings she's ever delivered -- the previous year's Sean-Nós Nua, her traditional album, was a knockout and perhaps her finest studio moment, but it went unnoticed here because Americans can't seem to forgive O'Connor for exercising her right to free speech (the audience at Bob Dylan's 30th anniversary concert should be especially ashamed). The studio sides released on disc one include her collaborations with everyone from Adrian Sherwood to the Asian Dub Foundation to Massive Attack to Roger Eno. Her covers of Dan Penn's "Do Right Woman," Boudleaux Bryant's ...
