AFI: Davey Havok (vocals); Jade Puget (guitar); Hunter (bass guitar); Adam Carson (drums). On its seventh full-length album, AFI (A Fire Inside) reunites with renowned producer Jerry Finn for a strikingly dynamic outing that builds on its highly successful predecessor, SING THE SORROW. While the California-based goth-influenced band still excels at hard-edged punk-pop, as best revealed on the catchy anthem "Miss Murder," it also makes impressive forays into techno-tinged rock on the surging "Love Like Winter" and the brooding, Depeche Mode-like "37mm." Although DECEMBERUNDERGROUND's few "screamo" moments prove to be a bit distracting, particularly on "Kill Caustic" and "Afflication," they reinforce both frontman Davey Havok's vocal range and the group's willingness to journey around the stylistic map, resulting in a bold, assured record. AFI is a band lucky to own fiercely loyal fans who embrace -- and ultimately expect -- the gradual transformation the band has undergone with each album since 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset. Where many bands get called out for signing to a major label or even just maturing their sound over time, AFI fans have chiefly stayed devoted to their ever-evolving goth-punk heroes. With that in mind, Decemberunderground comes as AFI's follow-up to their ambitious major-label smash Sing the Sorrow. Due to the clever production tricks employed on that album, fans might expect even more intricate arrangements, sound effects, and sonic landscapes to emerge from the wintry packaging of Decemberunderground. To an extent this is true, but it's more that the cloudy gloom permeating their career thus far has lifted, allowing a relatively tighter and lighter overall album to emerge. Take the band's traditional prelude for instance: this time it's infused with stirring strings and an uplifting dance-pop beat that is a far cry from the dark and eerie call-to-arms chants of previous albums. And though "Kill Caustic" (and later "Affliction") brings AFI's earlier hardcore punch, if you thought "Girl's Not Grey" was poppy, check out this record's lead single, "Miss Murder." Despite a slightly ominous undertone, the glam-tinged song is damn near playful and sunny amid bouncy rhythms, vaguely industrial beats, background "hey!"s (courtesy of AFI's fan brotherhood, the Despair Faction), and a bassline that could have been swiped from Green Day. The band further dips its hand into new wave exploits ("37mm"), truly stirring choruses ("Summer Shudder"), stark electro vibrations ("Love Like Winter"), and the customary ballad ("Endlessly, She Said"). AFI even comes as close as they probably ever will to sounding like U2 in "The Missing Frame." Somehow, the guys have managed to combine hardcore instincts with dark emo-coated lyrics, synth shimmies, gothic aesthetics, and electronic beats into a sound that still remains wholly AFI. So maybe that's why fans have stuck by the band over all these years. Even as the guys stretch and flex their songwriting muscles, they never fail to remember where they came from, instead using their past work as the foundation to their essential growth. Decemberunderground may have more fully realized doses of pop and electronic music present, but the core of AFI's sound never strays too far from what listeners have grown to love about them in the first place. ~ Corey AparRolling Stone (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here are moments on DECMBERUNDERGROUND that are poppier than anything AFI have ever done....A thoroughly enjoyable album to listen to..." Spin (p.81) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "DECEMBERUNDERGROUND sounds terrific....[It] has enough catchy refrains to make it a summer favorite for anyone looking to work out their aggressions." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "[F]ull of unpredictable high gloss anthems....The sound of AFI exceeding all expectations." $18.99 "Shoot For the Moon" is a diverse guitar rock album with electronic production utilizing stacked drums, percussion skin drums, grinding bass synths and ancient antique guitars. Even clay bird shaped Costa Rican flutes and a Jesus tamborine have their place in the multitude of trax stacked together to create this revolutionary album."Shoot For the Moon" is packed full of audio, a whopping 73 minutes and 43 seconds worth, just 17 seconds shy of a completely full cd. There are all kinds of moods to enhance your every emotion and make you feel more sophisticated and enlightened when you jam Jean Roca!Jean Roca got his first guitar when he was 9. It was a tiny harmony acoustic guitar that has since been glued back together to bring music to the streets of Earth. JR picked playing the electric guitar at the age of 13. The first guitar he really jammed on was an old Kalamazoo. It was his friend's, Craig Melancon's, given to him by his dad. That was the first time he had a chance to sit down and hammer something out. Craig showed JR what power chords were and young Jean Roca thought they were badass. They jammed throughout high school to Pantera, Old Metallica, and Nirvana. The first band JR played shows with was 'Spork' in high school when he was 15. The drummer was Jamey Crosby and bassist Joel Childress. They changed their name to 'Gollum's Revenge' because they were nerds and liked the Lord of the rings books. (That was before the movies) They went to a small high school and everywhere they played they were too loud and too heavy. They weren't able to get into any bars, or even to them for that matter. Jamey was oldest and had a Ram charger so they piled their equipment and would play dances, operation graduation, and spring fling. That's when Jean Roca learned how to rock for the cause. His next band was Carbon 14. He was a singer and stooge as he would dress up in crazy outfits and do erratic things on stage. He learned the power of his voice and the limits of it too. Corey Trahan wrote most of the songs and played lead guitar. Ryan Landry played bass and Daniel Maguire played drums. After Joey quit rhythm guitar JR took over and soon after they dissloved the band after the drummer tried to choke JR cause he got all the chics and Corey and Ryan moved to Austin and Jean Roca couldn't cause there's no surf there. Now I'm tired of writing in 3rd person so I am going to change the narration of my life's musical journey to 1st person. I was confused what I wanted to do with my life but I knew it had to revolve around music. After a trip to Austin to go see my old friends from Carbon 14 Corey, Ryan and Brad Byram from Ugly Tribe I knew what it was. I went to the studio with them to ...
