12 Exitos
$15.25 The first cut of this beautifully haunting soundtrack to an exotically seductive movie sums it up; Lila Downs's impassioned vocal and the almost ambient Latin overtones of the instrumental backing all point to a compelling trip through a mysterious Mexico that in the mid-20th century was still terra incognita to most Westerners. FRIDA is packed with musical jewels, such as the inclusion of Chavela Vargas's "Paloma Negra," recorded 40 years earlier. Vargas, a former lover of Frida Kahlo's, gives a performance that's more like a force of nature than anything else, devoid of sentimentality and yet viscerally affecting. But it's Lila Downs, who's featured throughout this soundtrack CD, who carries the show, particularly in her performance with the legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso on "Burn it Blue," penned by the movie's director, Julie Taymor. Atmospheric instrumentals abound, and wonderful folk song vignettes are interspersed throughout, giving FRIDA an air of authenticity and purpose that lifts it head and shoulders above the usual run-of-the-mill Hollywood soundtrack collection.
Original score composed by Elliot Goldenthal.
Recorded at Manhattan Center, Zarathustra Hall, New York, New York and Churubusco ...
| | Joyce Cooling Revolving Door CD (2006)
12 Exitos
$12.95 On her previous album, This Girl's Got to Play -- which was inspired by the soul-searching she did post 9/11 -- this popular San Francisco-based smooth jazz guitarist made an ongoing commitment to making music about things that matter. Joyce Cooling's early album titles were cute twists on her name, but the Revolving Door she's referring to on this diverse and heartfelt disc goes into some deep territory; it's about the cycle of mental illness, which she knows intimately about due to growing up with a brother who was schizophrenic. That sounds like heavy stuff for an artist in a genre that's usually about happy escapist music, but Cooling finds a way to balance the darker edges with the joyful breeziness that has long endeared her to fans. First the shadier stuff, off the smooth path: the title track is a seductive and emotional blues-drenched expression featuring some of her most gutsy, heartfelt playing ever; it's reminiscent of some of Larry Carlton's brilliant fusions of smooth jazz and real blues. Though it only runs for over a minute, the simple and percussive acoustic tune "In Case of Rain" delves into some interesting Brazilian territory, while "Jesse's Bench" more fully explores her talent for gritty emotional digging on the acoustic. Powered by trippy and hypnotic backing vocals, "Cool of the Night" is all vibey, atmospheric, exotic, retro, and has an irresistible straight-ahead drum brush-driven groove. These songs show tremendous artistic growth for both her and her longtime keyboardist partner ...

$7.75 35 ANIVERSARIO LO MEJOR DE LARA won the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Ranchero Album.
Agustin Lara was one of Mexico's great songwriters, and certainly one of the most widely recorded, in addition to composing songs for many Mexican films of the 1930s and '40s. While many have almost forgotten him in the last three decades, Vicente Fernández obviously hasn't. To celebrate his 35th year as a recording artist, he's put together a disc of the best of Lara's work -- at least in his eyes. Always a romantic, Fernández has gone for the big songs, ...

$14.29 The Earth Band captured live in Boston 1977. Longtime fans of Manfred Mann know that he has a great ear for great songs and quite often records definitive cover versions. Of the 5 covers on this set, 2 were composed by Bob Dylan, ("Father Of Day, Father Of Night" and "The Mighty Quinn", with which Mann hit No. 1 in the 60's), 3 Bruce Springsteen covers ("Blinded By The Light", "Spirit In The Night" and "For You") and finally a Robbie Robertson / John Simon song, "Davy's On The Road Again". The rest are Earth Band originals. This live recording was one of the last to feature bass player Colin Pattenden, who departed at tours end.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band's Alive in America was recorded in Boston to be syndicated for American radio. The tour followed the band's two albums, Nightingales & Bombers and the hugely successful The Roaring Silence. Mick Rogers had departed as the band's lead vocalist by this point, and was replaced by Chris Thompson, who had played on the latter album. Thompson is not as strong as a singer, but he does the job and the group is in fine form here. The quality of the sound itself leaves a bit to be desired but this is a wonderful historical document with Mann, guitarists Thompson and Dave Flett, bassist Colin Pattenden ...

$12.05 When the Scandinavian extreme metal scene is discussed, one often hears Norway mentioned in connection with black metal and neighboring Sweden mentioned in connection with death metal. But Norway has had its share of noteworthy death metal bands, and Sweden has had its share of noteworthy black metal bands. Sweden's black metal bands have included, among many others, Marduk, Dark Funeral, and Setherial. Side projects are not uncommon for Nordic black metal and death metal bands, and Blackwinds are a side project for Setherial drummer Lord Mysteriis. Setherial's work is far from symphonic black metal; they favor a go-for-the-jugular approach to black metal, and they aren't the least bit apologetic about it. But Flesh Inferno points to the fact that Blackwinds are somewhat more melodic and forgiving than Setherial -- "somewhat" being the operative word. Blackwinds aren't symphonic black metal either; they don't have the lushness that symphonic black metal is known for (some symphonic black metal bands are so lush and so elaborate that they can honestly claim ...
