The first comprehensive anthology of Ray Peterson's RCA Victor and Dunes recordings rounds up most of his hits and shows the frail-looking teen idol -- known primarily for his contribution to the teen tragedy craze, "Tell Laura I Love Him" -- to be a talented pop vocalist with a piercing falsetto. Peterson's infrequent rock & roll performances tend to be his weakest; he shines the most on the orchestrated teen ballads that exercise his pure pop vocal abilities. Johnny Vallis' essay details Peterson's troubled journey from his polio-stricken childhood to becoming a sickly, underweight star whose manager physically abused him. Several of Peterson's Dunes songs appear in re-recorded stereo rather than the original mono versions, including his second-biggest hit, "Corrina, Corinna." As a result, the version of that song presented here cannot be accurately considered the hit, but it is so similar to the original that most listeners will not notice the difference. There are a number of oddities in Peterson's catalog, including a pop version of Webb Pierce's country hit "I'm Tired," a vocal version of Pérez Prado's instrumental hit "Patricia," and the dramatic teen tragedy song "Give Us Your Blessings," which later became a hit for the Shangri-Las. Spectorites will be interested in the Dunes recordings that Phil Spector produced, but, unlike the typical Bear Family release, Peterson's anthology does not include a discography or sessionography. Tell Laura I Love Her is a lavish tribute to a teen idol whose fascinating and sometimes tragic biography is as interesting as the music itself. ~ Greg Adams
The late Ray Peterson was one of pop music's great stylists and most accomplished vocalists. This CD contains - for the first time - a combination of his RCA and Dunes masters, a total of 31 songs. | Tell Laura I Love Her Music Tell Laura I Love Her Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Ultimate Ray Peterson
The late Ray Peterson was the ultimate accomplished vocalist of teenage longing and heartbreak. During his early '60s peak, the four and a half octave range, the dramatic flair, and the naked empathy were all unique. Re-mastered for the first time on CD, all of Peterson's highest charted recordings for RCA and Dunes including his smash hit Tell Laura I Love Her, the Baker Knight penned The Wonder Of You (a hit later for Elvis Presley) and the Phil Spector produced Corinna Corinna are here. "It was a real thrill hearing 'Tell Laura I Love Her' as sung by Ray, with such heart, like it happened to him, or Tommy was his brother," marvels songwriter Jeff Barry. "Ray was an artist who sang the words - he let his innate talent take care of the notes."
Peterson's story, along with newly discovered information, is told by entertainer/essayist Johnny Vallis in a remarkably informative booklet that boasts both a detailed discography and a generous selection of rare photos. The digi-pac is jam packed with 31 stellar recordings, many fan favorites are re-released for the first time, all with the famous Bear Family sound. More than just a hits collection; this superior package provides a fitting retrospective to an often overlooked talent.

Tell Laura I Love Her
$13.59 This 75-minute album, originally a double-LP (recorded live at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on April 3, 1970) is a valiant attempt at capturing the Association's concert sound on record. Unfortunately, it fails for several reasons, beginning with the fact that the instrumental mix is very bass-heavy -- even with adjustments to compensate, this overwhelms much of the rest of the band on several key numbers. Additionally, the group's singing, though more than adequate, lacks the presence needed to give their harmonies the necessary ...

Tell Laura I Love Her
$16.89 This 1998 reissue contains 7 bonus tracks not on the original release.
On Ian Dury's second outing with the Blockheads, the strangely charismatic British singer continues to spout witty narratives in his trademark Cockney accent over a musical backdrop that largely eschews punk in favor of a disco vibe. Of course, this being the every-quirky Dury, the dance-floor feel on this 1979 record is loose and pub-oriented, rather than slick and club-ready. Despite the New Wave trappings, Dury still sounds like a surly traveling salesman from a long-lost era, especially when he's spewing out insults, as on the silly, swaggering "Uneasy Sunny Day Hotsy Totsy." In addition to jaunty tracks such as "Inbetweenies," the 1998 remastered reissue of DO IT YOURSELF features a handful of classic Dury singles as bonus tracks, most notably the cheeky "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" and the whimsical "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3," making this, along with NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES, an essential disc for any respectable Dury fan.
Ian Dury's music always bordered on the functional, since it was used as a backdrop for his wry vignettes and stories, but on his second album, Do It Yourself, that aspect came to the fore. Largely abandoning the punk inflections that were scattered throughout New Boots and Panties!!, Do It Yourself is a record of mid-tempo pub rock disco -- competently played, but rarely engaging. Dury's stories are all wonderful, filled with humor and penetrating detail, but only a handful of tracks, such as the terrific "Inbetweenies," are married to actual hooks, and by the end of the record, the steady disco throb has become a little numbing. Even with these faults, Do It Yourself remains one of Dury's ...
