| | Tom Lellis Avenue Of The Americas CD Tom Lellis Discography of CDs
This album blends Tom Lellis' smooth distinctive vocals with American Jazz and Brazilian music. It features international musicians Toninho Horta, Richard Bona, Kenny Werner and many others. The CD contains music by Metheny, Horta, and Yellow Jackets wit
Personnel: Tom Lellis (vocals, whistle, keyboards); Toninho Horta (guitar); Jeremy Steig (flute); Richard Bona (bass guitar); Tommy Campbell (drums). Based on this music, Avenue of the Americas symbolizes where North, Central, and South American music meet. Some of the music on this set is Brazilian jazz while other selections are post-bop American music. Tom Lellis contributed lyrics to pieces by Pat Metheny, guitarist Toninho Horta, the Yellowjackets, and Keith Jarrett in addition to writing "A Change of Fates" by himself. In addition to individual songs, he performs a few medleys, and on the last two pieces, he contributes all of the voices and the instruments. Even with all of the hard work, the lyrics are generally not that terribly memorable and the modern music lacks very many catchy melodies. However Lellis is in top voice and he utilizes his sidemen, particularly guitarist Horta and flutist Jeremy Steig (who duets with Lellis on the medley of "Pure Imagination" and "Waiting for Angela") quite well. This is very much a haunting and atmospheric set, one of Lellis' most intriguing to date. ~ Scott Yanow
JazzTimes (p.127) - "Lellis is the dexterous force at AMERICA's hub, augmenting his quadruple-threat talents as vocalist, arranger, composer and lyricist with turns at piano and keyboards, guitar and percussion." Avenue Of The Americas
$15.95 Liner Note Author: Greil Marcus. Recording information: House Of Cash Recording Studio (07/11/1973-12/??/1982). Photographer: Jim Marshall . Released less than three years after Johnny Cash's passing in 2003, Legacy's two-disc PERSONAL FILE collection presents a wealth of previously unreleased material. Although the country legend recorded some of these 49 songs (including "Tiger Whitehead" and "No Earthly Good") on other occasions, the sessions here primarily showcase the Man in Black playing for his own satisfaction in the House of Cash studio, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. While the spare tunes clearly point to Cash's lauded 1990s comeback, they were cut between '73 and '82, a time when his musical career was on the wane, but he was still well known for his television appearances and evangelical work. With no record company pressure to cater to the prevailing sound of the time, Cash sounds completely assured and at ease on these bare-bones tracks, whether covering the Louvin Brothers ("When I Stop Dreaming"), taking on traditional tunes ("Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes"), or offering up rare originals ("It's All Over," "I Wanted So"), his bold, unmistakable baritone voice always at the fore. Though this intimate set is primarily geared toward devoted Cash fans, the performances on PERSONAL FILE, which often include spoken introductions, are so charming that those less familiar with the Man in Black will also find much to enjoy. Usually, when an artist of stature passes, the record company (or companies, and sometimes even family, look at the sad posthumous legacy of Townes Van Zandt for example) raid the vaults and unearth loads of embarrassing garbage along with a few gems. Personal File, issued by Sony Legacy, is very different. For starters, other than Hank Williams, there ...
