$10.99 (MP3 Available for Download) Although for the rest of his life, underinformed fans of 1990s pop will forever be calling Darius Rucker "Hootie," the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer-songwriter makes his solo debut with a perfectly credible take on mainstream contemporary Nashville country. The laid-back, largely acoustic folk-pop of Hootie & the Blowfish was never that far removed from contemporary country in the first place, so only the fact that Rucker is the first major African-American country star since the heyday of Charley Pride makes the stylistic crossover ...

| | By George (& Ira): Red Hot On Gershwin CD (1998)
Leucasia CD music
$11.45 Major record companies rarely run out of ways to package previously issued material, and Verve is among the more active (and imaginative) companies in this regard. One of their more popular reissue formats is a series of compilations of songs by important contributors to the Great American Popular Songbook. And there are none who have made greater contributions than the brothers Gershwin, George and Ira. The compilation technique permits companies to include only the best performances of the composer's music from their vault, helping to assure a winner. Red & Hot on Gershwin is no exception to this marketing principle. This is a set of excellent performances by a host of fine musicians who have recorded for the Norman Granz label. With the exception of the cut by Janis Joplin, all of the numbers were recorded during the '40s, '50s and '60s, and the participants, including the so-called sidemen, read like a who's-who of the upper echelon of jazz musicians. The producers have included a good balance between instrumentals and vocals, as well as between jazz styles. Bop luminaries are represented by Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, mainstream jazz by Louis Armstrong and Oscar Peterson. Lester Young, doing "The Man I Love," represents that class established by Duke Ellington for the very special -- "beyond category." Multiple versions of some songs appear here, reaffirming the jazz principle that there can be legitimate differences in the way artists approach the same material. Viva la difference.
Contrasting vocal styles are reflected by Nina Simone (whose "I Loves You, Porgy" may well be the seminal version of the classic tune), the delicate-voiced Blossom Dearie, and Sarah ...

| | Spade Cooley Fidoodlin' CD (1959)
Leucasia songs
$11.79 This is one of a precious few studio long players to have been documented by the legendary and infamous Spade Cooley, the self-proclaimed "King of Western Swing." His long and illustrious career included stints as an actor during the 1930s for Republic Studios in a handful of serials and full-length flicks. By the late '50s, Cooley's star had significantly faded; however, he was hosting a local variety TV show in Los Angeles at the end of the decade when Fidoodlin' (1959) was released. The sessions, which were his first in half a decade, also turned out to be his last. According to Joseph F. Laredo's liner notes, found in the 2004 CD reissue, the sides spotlight Cooley backed by the same combo that accompanied him on his short-lived weekly telecast. The results were delivered in a style fusing the buoyant and somewhat soulless effervescence inherent ...

| | Blick Van Glory Search For Quest CD (2007)
Leucasia CD music
$12.65 Blick Van Glory is the rock and roll invention of filmmaker Todd Edwards, who co-created the 2006 hit movie Hoodwinked for which he also wrote 10 original songs including Red Is Blue performed by Ben Folds. Although music was always in his peripheral, Todd began as a filmmaker. In 1999, just a couple years after graduating college, his first movie Chillicothe premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival to outstanding reviews and packed audiences. Todd also starred as the lead actor in the film, and wrote one original song, 'Midnight.' But as Todd quickly learned, the success of a festival run does not a movie career make. For the next few years as he struggled to get a second film off the ground, he and screenwriting partner Peter Bedgood began performing music in coffee shops around Los Angeles under the name Milk the Spider. “We wrote about 100 songs, and had about 50 fans. So that's like...2 songs per fan if you do the math.”In 2002 Todd went into hibernation with a small group who spent three years making Hoodwinked starring Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close and Patrick Warburton. The movie went on to open number 2 at the box office and become a global hit—becoming the most successful independent CGI movie to date. During the production Todd worked with composer/producer John Mark Painter (of Fleming and John) on ten original songs. For Blick Van Glory's premier album, The Search for Quest, Todd turned to Painter once again to produce. “John has been my secret weapon...I wrote the songs and devised the parts, and he performed most of the instruments and brought it together as a producing genius. The album title comes from Peter Bedgood. Back when we were shooting our first movie, it was his tagline for a bad sequel ...
