| | Negative Reaction Under The Ancient Penalty CD Negative Reaction Discography of CDs
Despite its prevalence throughout the Southeastern states, and particularly in the New Orleans area (hence its becoming described as the "NOLA sound"), sludge/doom metal never really took hold across the rest of America; meaning that a sludge metal band like New York's Negative Reaction remains a local treasure, at best -- an isolated and misunderstood anomaly doomed (forgive the pun) to failure, at worst. Under the Ancient Penalty is the trio's fourth full-length studio album in a decade-plus career, and, whatever its eventual success rate, it sure makes a helluva statement for extremely crusty, torpid sludge in its most primal, uncompromising, and unforgiving state. Listening to band founder and ever-present leader Ken E. Bones lead his henchmen through foot-dragging, Eyehategod-inspired sludge-fests like "Lost," "Empty," and "Alone," it's impossible to decide which instrument conveys the greatest amount of pain: his tortured, high-pitched whine, or his molten magma de-tuned guitar chords -- both of which suggest a very unhappy individual, in any case. Give the guy credit for not mincing words or abusing metaphors when it comes to those song titles, though, as these also include such monuments to directness in lyric writing as "Loathing" and album standouts "Suffer" and "Pain" (boy, didn't you see that title coming?), both of which, ironically represent the album's most energized, pulse-registering moments. Even so, manic depressives will be happy to know that even the latter never really threatens to lift the pall of negativity hanging over the entire album, so if it's true that "misery loves company," they'll be jumping off cliffs like lemmings to the soundtrack of Negative Reaction. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Blut Aus Nord Mort CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Under The Ancient Penalty
$15.85 When fans of extreme metal hear the word "complexity" in connection with black metal, many of them immediately think of symphonic black metal; they think of the bands that have expanded black metal's horizons by combining it with power metal and even progressive rock. But Mort, like previous Blut Aus Nord releases, brings complexity and nuance to black metal without having anything to do with symphonic black metal -- and while a symphonic black metal band might claim Queensr˙che, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden as influences (along with Dimmu Borgir and Emperor), this French outfit gets a lot of inspiration from industrial and goth rock. The non-black metal influences that have served Blut Aus Nord well in the past -- influences ranging ...

| | David Bowie ChangesBowie CD (1990) (Import) United Kingdom
Under The Ancient Penalty
$13.15 Long before Madonna started changing hairstyles between albums, David Bowie set the standard (and continues to do so) for chameleonic music styles that go beyond mere hair dye. CHANGESBOWIE is the perfect road map that allows the listener to hear the different pitstops Bowie made into the mid-'80s. Throughout the '70s, Bowie's personas included space alien ("Ziggy Stardust," "Suffragette City"), theatrical raconteur ("Rebel, Rebel"), blue-eyed soulster ("Young Americans") and Thin White Duke ("Golden Years"). After spending time in Berlin under self-imposed exile ("Heroes"), he returned to the West and within a few short years, David Bowie was back on the top of the charts thanks to a dance-rock collaboration with Nile Rodgers ("Let's Dance"). Bowie's constant need to reinvent himself is so pervasive that upon originally releasing this collection on Rykodisc, he returned to the studio and recorded an updated, '90s remix of "Fame" that sounds as if Art Of Noise were his back-up band.

Under The Ancient Penalty
$13.85 Sometimes, a veteran headbanger will throw his/her admirers a major curve ball. The rap-metal/alternative metal that Tommy Lee offered on his Methods of Mayhem project of 1999, for example, was a total departure from the decadent Sunset Strip boogie that his former band, Mötley Crüe, was best known for in the '80s. But other times, ...
