| | David "Fathead" Newman Straight Ahead CD (1960)
Ice review
$9.85 The title of this 1961 release best sums up this quartet album. There is nothing particularly innovative about this recording, but the level of expertise and musical maturity displayed here is truly astonishing. This is simply straight-ahead hard bop performed by some of the finest musicians in 1960s jazz, including saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman and pianist Wynton Kelly.
Newman's playing is not only confident, it is unbelievably inspired. He rips through all six selections here, employing the great bebop vernacular developed by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Newman plays tenor, alto, and flute on STRAIGHT AHEAD, providing some variation to this set. Newman's flute work on his composition "Night of Nisan" is particularly energetic, as is his alto solo on his bluesy "Congo Chant." The highlight of the record, however, is the smoking, Caribbean-flavored opening track, "Batista's Groove."
Originally released in 1961. Pianist Wynton Kelly, bass player Paul Chambers and drummer Charlie Persip round out the David Newman quartet on songs ...

$11.69 This Joe D'Amato (TROLL 2) horror film was produced by the not quite legendary Filmirage Productions, an Italian horror house for whom D'Amato directed many (cheap) movies. KILLING BIRDS is no exception, but it begins with a bang when a Vietnam vet returns to his Louisiana home only to find his wife in bed with another man. Enraged, he kills them both, along with a child. Unfortunately, his wife's lover also kept birds, which promptly attack him and peck out his eyes, sending him fleeing the house. The story then jumps forward 20 years when a group of college students head out to the Louisiana Bayou to study birds and end up spending some time near a rundown old house. It isn't long before kids start dying at the hands of zombies and the aforementioned birds. A curious mixture of elements from films like THE BIRDS and THE FOG, KILLING BIRDS ...
| | Sonny DVD (2002) Widescreen; Subtitled
Ice video
$6.35 Nicholas Cage's directorial debut SONNY is the story of a young man (James Franco) who returns to the life he left behind in New Orleans after a brief stint in the Army. That life, provided by his mother Jewel (Brenda Blethyn), is one of small-time prostitution: mom is a madam, and Sonny has been in the brothel all his life. His brief excursion into the broader world makes Sonny want a different life, but he finds that his old habits--as well as the pull of young call girl Carol (Mena Suvari), and the bond with his mother's companion Henry (Harry Dean Stanton)--make leaving nearly impossible.
For his first shot at directing, Cage chose a particularly gritty, knotted story in SONNY. Barry Markowitz's rich cinematography is nearly tactile, and Cage makes the interesting choice of having the colorful (in more ways than one) city of New Orleans mostly push through the edges of the movie, which is primarily shot in close-up. Those tight shots reveal the simmering rage in Franco's character, as well as the strange Oedipal twist of the hustling son who tries to please his mother by having sex with other women.
