Best known for her 1990s solo work on 4AD and stints performing with the likes of John Mellencamp and Iggy Pop, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Lisa Germano began a new chapter in her remarkably varied career with 2006's IN THE MAYBE WORLD, her debut on Young God Records, the label founded by Michael Gira (Swans/the Angels of Light). On these 12 tracks, Germano creates a delicate, dreamy atmosphere that envelops her bittersweet melodies, as exemplified by the spare "Too Much Space," the lilting "Golden Cities," and the appropriately winsome "In the Land of Fairies." These tunes drift in and out like transmissions from a slightly foreboding fantasy world, making for a fascinating album that defiantly avoids almost all modern pop trappings.
Personnel: Johnny Marr (guitar); Joey Waronker (drums).
Spin (p.78) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Germano's wooziest and most ethereal yet, a haunted swirl of shimmering strings, breathy vocals, and warped-mirror piano." Magnet (p.96) - "The words still wound, but never fatally, and for all her pain, the melodies have never sounded prettier or her voice more vulnerable." CMJ (p.5) - "Lisa Germano's lush and beautifully composed 10th release comes from a daring place where fears are faced and the past is revisited." No Depression (p.126) - "[S]he takes familiar materials -- piano, violin and guitar are her primary instruments -- and fashions them into striking tableaux, crafted on a small scale." Mojo (Publisher) (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]orch-lit lullabies and beguiling faery-tale whispers that wield both a wistful poignancy and raw emotional undertow." The music presented here ranges from J. Scott Skinner's "Dr. Gordon Stables,'" a wonderful fiery reel I once played to garner my first national fiddling title as a young teenager; to "Fear A Bhata," a heartbreaking air which after thirty years, still bursts out of me during moments of intense melancholy. The final set of tunes, beginning with "Purser's Air," are new compositions written for old friends. An unaccompanied work, it reflects my undying passion for Scottish fiddle music. It is my wish that these melodies will grow on you as they have grown on me. Thank you for listening." BELOW ARE FROM THE CD BOOKLET:1. $17.05 The Clint Miller StoryClint Miller is a legend in Christian country music, a true pioneer. What is true of so many other gospel artists is true of Clint and that is he has relied upon the Lord, His grace and His leading to make something of worth out of his ministry. Clint Miller, however, had another gifting from the Lord working in his favor and that was a strong work ethic coupled with determination. The Lord used Clint's father, George Miller, to impart these valuable gifts to his son. Before Clint was born, his 21 year old father lost his left arm in a farming accident. Still, Clint never forgot his father's life long determination to provide for his family. Just 11 days after the tragic accident, George Miller was back home working on his farm. George had a wife and at that time one child at home that he needed to provide for and he would not let them down. George and his wife had seven more children and Clint was the youngest in the family. The perseverance to overcome adversity that Clint saw in his father impacted his entire life.Clint was born in Wessington Springs, South Dakota in 1949, but when he was 7 the family moved to Los Angles, California. George Miller worked until he had saved enough money to open his own business. In no time , the entire family was working at Miller's Service Station and Garage in Santa Monica. God blessed the business and in time the Miller station expanded into several locations. As a teenager Clint developed a love for music. In his ninth year of school, he entered the Hollywood Professional School full time and graduated with honors including the President's Award and the Gold Key Award. From there, Clint became an honor student at the highly prestigious Don Martin School of Radio and Television and signed with VMC Records and the Charles Stern Advertising Agency.Clint released many original songs with VMC Records. He also performed on many commercials for Charles Stern. It was during this time in his life when he met and developed friendships with many stars of the day including Charlton Heston, Glen Ford, Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. Clint also stared and toured with the musical comedies Hoop & Holla and Oklahoma. It was during this highly ...
