| | Head Cat Fool's Paradise CD Head Cat Discography of CDs
Few musicians are as synonymous with heavy metal as Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister. But long time fans know that ol' Lemmy has tackled other styles over the years, including British Invasion pop (as part of the Rockin' Vicars) and space rock (as part of Hawkwind). Additionally, Lemmy has covered a few country and/or rockabilly tunes over the years, including a metallic version of "Stand By Your Man," Carl Perkins' "Matchbox," and Johnny Cash's "Big River." So it shouldn't come as a surprise that in the early 21st century, Lemmy launched a rockabilly side project, the Head Cat. Taking a break from his beloved Rickenbacker bass, Lemmy handles vocals (which resemble little of the throaty growl of his Motorhead work), acoustic guitar, and harmonica duties, and is joined by ex-Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom and lead guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Danny B. Harvey. As evidenced by their 2006 debut, Fool's Paradise, the trio is one rockin' good time -- a much needed antidote to the computer/software enhanced state of popular music. Expectedly, this isn't going to melt your speakers upon first listen like Ace of Spades did all those years ago. That said, it's certainly a worthwhile listen for die-hard fans to hear Lemmy tackle covers of some of his favorite standards -- "Not Fade Away," "Well All Right," as well as the two aforementioned tracks, "Big River" and "Matchbox." ~ Greg Prato

Fool's Paradise album
$9.79 This limited edition of WARNING contains a 64-page booklet. It is packaged in a digipack in a green plastic bag.
To debate whether or not Green Day truly was or is a punk band in the purest definition of the punk ethic now seems irrelevant. If nothing else, they're a pop band who can't seem to help but write good songs--in the case of WARNING, some really good songs. This album makes up for any missteps the band may have taken since the fluke success of DOOKIE.
From the Katrina And The Waves groove of "Castaway" to the Beatles-esque harmonica on "Hold On," WARNING inspires a sense of musical deja vu that never crosses the line into out-and-out thievery. Hands-down, the most interesting track here is "Misery," ...
| | Diamanda Galas Plague Mass (1984 End Of The Epidemic) CD (1991)
Fool's Paradise CD music
$10.69 Diamanda Galas, who has been known for both her own work and as a singer of extremely demanding modern scores, created this heart-wrenching cry about the physical suffering caused by the AIDS plague being compounded by the shameful arrogance of self-appointed moralists. Maintaining an incredible intensity and depth for over an hour's solo vocal (recorded live at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC, with suitably minimal band and electronics backup), Galas proceeds through Mahalia Jackson-influenced spiritual singing, saxophone-like wails, to dramatic dialogues in many dialects and languages ("there are no more tickets to the funeral") to engrossing Portuguese fado singing to taking on the attributes of Satan (in "Sono L'Antichristo," "I Am the Anti-Christ") in order to challenge the concept of a vengeful, instead of compassionate ...

| | Pele Elephant CD (1999) Bonus Tracks
Fool's Paradise CD music
$10.39 With enough chops to burn and enough good sense not to, Pele is helping redefine the concept of the instrumental rock trio. This is gorgeous, mesmerizing post-rock. Tall chords (i.e., chords with a whole lotta notes) collide with gentle melodies and angular rhythms to create what is easily one of the best instrumental discs of the late '90s. Think of a more rockin', spastic Pat Metheny Group, circa 1976. And just ...

| | Upsilon Acrux Radian Futura CD (2009)
Fool's Paradise CD music
$14.25 Young ears listening to Upsilon Acrux are likely to hear math rock and post-rock influences from the likes of Ahleuchatistas, Hella, and Orthrelm. Older ears will hear Henry Cow and maybe King Crimson. Radian Futura consists of six tracks, five of which range from just over one to six minutes in length, and one of which is nearly half an hour long (the latter is presented in what's described as a "Radio Edit," which has to be intended as a joke). The Henry Cow influence is especially audible on "In-a-Gadda-DeVito" (har har), which features cutesy melodic passages and counterpoint that hark back explicitly to the British rock experimentalism of the early '70s. ...
