Prone Mortal Form/Innocents album
$5.29 San Francisco's precocious Death Angel finally reached musical adulthood (though some band members were still barely old enough to vote) with 1990's Act III. Their first album to benefit from major-label distribution and a truly top-notch production courtesy of Max Norman, it also witnessed the continuing development of lead guitarist Rob Cavestany, who literally dominated ...
| | Metal Church Dark CD (1987)
Prone Mortal Form/Innocents CD music
$7.49 Metal Church's excellent debut had impressed critics and fans alike with its ferocious blend of classic metal and thrash. But by the time they released its follow-up, 1986's The Dark, the band seemed to be struggling with their direction and wrestling with internal problems. The fact that they were collectively one of the most unattractive bands ever (even by heavy metal standards) didn't help matters either, especially in image-conscious America, so it was no surprise when the band's appeal remained firmly confined to the metal underground. Which is too bad, since The Dark contained some of the group's best material, including the brutal intensity of "Start the Fire" and "Method to Your Madness," as well as what was probably their best-known song, the astoundingly heavy epic "Watch the Children Play." Extensive touring with Elektra labelmates Metallica had also motivated the band to develop their thrashier inclinations, resulting in vicious moshers like "Ton of Bricks" and "Over My Dead ...

Prone Mortal Form/Innocents CD music
$44.45 Dave Mustaine, who broke down so candidly in Metallica's SOME KIND OF MONSTER documentary, has nothing to be ashamed of. Since his unceremonious boot from Metallica, he's been responsible for some of the most thrilling, adventurous metal in existence with his project Megadeth. With their first release, 1985's KILLING IS MY BUSINESS AND BUSINESS IS GOOD, Megadeth combined thrash metal heaviness with jazz-inspired improvisation to express Mustaine's singular take on heavy music, and they never looked back. WARCHEST isn't just the most comprehensive one-stop Megadeth collection; it also debuts a whopping 33 unreleased tracks, including an entire show from the band's 1990 peak.
The first three discs feature scattered, thrilling tracks from Megadeth's studio albums interspersed with demos, live songs, and outtakes, including Megadeth standards like "The Skull Beneath the Skin" (from their debut), and "Symphony Of Destruction" (from their crossover smash COUNTDOWN ...

$13.19 Volume two in Ubiquity's fabulous merger of techno and timbale is hot enough to set the speaker fabric afire. 2000 has seen countless producers mining the Cuban/Latin/Brazilian/electronica interface. Ubiquity has had a buzz on this kind of thing for years. Armed with in-house contributors and a bevy of similarly minded souls selected from the electronica underground, the label presents another definitive collection for the rhumba-tronic set.

Prone Mortal Form/Innocents album
$24.95 A running joke in the '90s had it that plenty of goth/industrial types ended up in rave culture, whether due to changing tastes or simply because of appreciation of punishing beats -- certainly the roots of so much techno in those styles had always been subculturally clear. So seeing someone like Thomas Brinkmann essentially create his own tribute to those roots with an art/goth album, When Horses Die, is both appropriate and intriguing -- and Brinkmann's hardly hiding it, with his first two thank yous in the liner notes going to Trent Reznor and Winston Tong. Tong himself provided the lyrics to the ruminative opener "Words," with Brinkmann's dark, dry voice speak-singing over minimal keyboards; with that as a clear signpost, When Horses Die proceeds to explore the kind of dark, poetic work in Tong's vein and others, with minimal textures refracted through an often beatless techno lens. The overlay of a slow surging drone and a clipped keyboard melody on "Spiral" and the soft, contemplative ...
