| | Kieran Hebden DJ-Kicks CD - Import Kieran Hebden Discography of CDs
No stranger to in-the-mix compilations (see his 2004 LATE NIGHT TALES disc), Kieran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet) offers up a highly eclectic set on this installment of the DJ-KICKS series. Among the songs selected by the lauded British electronica artist are Curtis Mayfield's gentle funk tune "If I Were Only a Child Again," Stereolab's pulsing techno-pop track "Les Yper-Sound," and Cabaret Voltaire's minimalist industrial number "Kneel to the Boss." The main draw for Four Tet fans, of course, is Hebden's own previously unreleased "Pockets," a synth-heavy piece that features clattering percussion. While Four Tet's gleeful genre-hopping may be too much for some--the track listing also features underground hip-hop and indie-folk--open-minded listeners will be rewarded with a fascinatingly varied collection.

DJ-Kicks album
$12.89 The sisters Casady set the weirdness bar awfully high on their homemade debut, LA MAISON DE MON REVE, but this inspired follow-up finds the bar ascended as the angels take it on the road, recording everywhere from barnyards to actual music studios. As usual, classically trained vocalist Sierra delivers the delirious operatic vocalizing and plays piano, dulcimer, and autoharp while Bianca coos like a 12-year old vampire Billie Holiday and makes percussive noise from computers and shakers with equal abandon.
The difference here is in the confidence, the polish, and the guest stars: Antony (of Antony & the Johnsons) singing and playing piano on the movingly transgressive "Beautiful Boyz," Devendra Banhart sampled from what sounds like an old scratchy 78 (actually a ...

DJ-Kicks CD music
$10.79 The debut of singer/multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon (aka Beirut), 2006's GULAG ORKESTAR marks the arrival of a precocious talent. It's a lushly arranged album that reveals Condon's unabashed adoration of Eastern European folk music, gilded with swaying accordion lines, rapturous string passages, and jangling percussion that seem wholly rooted in traditional Slavic music (see the waltz-like "Prenzlauerberg")--making its creation by a young Europhile ...

DJ-Kicks music CDs
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Phil de Lancie (1999, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Tenor sax legend Rollins (who played with jazz giants Max Roach and Thelonious Monk in the 1950s) takes it easy here with a set of easy-listening style tunes. Many of the tunes have an appealing "island vacation" feel to them--note the warm, bouncy calypso feel of "Coconut Bread" and the strutting light funk of "Joyous Lake." "Jo Jo" reflects Rollins' 1960s freewheeling hard-bop jazz sound, and Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again" gets a playful workout. "Illusions" features some steely yet soulful ballad playing.
Rollins' playing is melodically direct, full-bodied and gently rollicking, and guitarist Bobby Broom and vibist Bobby Hutcherson provide a shimmering, dancing backdrop. Drummer Tony Williams (who played in the superb Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s) provides what can be best described as a rocking swing beat. NO PROBLEM is not for the fans of the Rollins classics such as THE BRIDGE or EAST BROADWAY RUN-DOWN, but smooth jazz-fans who are hungry for a bit of grit would do well to check this out.

$12.19 If Built to Spill's albums have always served as a kind of starting point--introducing fans to songs later to be reinvented via extended live guitar jams--2000's LIVE can be seen as the next step: a capturing of the band's sprawling sound in concert. With 20-minute thunder runs ...

$9.85 Hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina, Raw Dog is a musical project that started off as a four-track recording experiment. Since 2006, the music has evolved into a bizarre mixture of the electronica, country, heavy metal, and psychedelic genres. The band was started by founding members BIG D and MK5, also of the Raleigh/Durham punk bands SIXTEEN SHOT CLIP/DEAD TO SOCIETY. They wanted to have ...
