(2 Customer Reviews)
This baroque-sounding Texas quartet is led by recording engineer and producer John Congleton, who has been transforming his inner demons into disturbing musical vignettes since 1999. In the Paper Chase's world, electronica clashes with ancient harmoniums and shrieking string sections, dissonance is commonplace, threatening voices mutter just beneath the sonic surface, and dread lurks everywhere. With all this rampant paranoia, it's a wonder Congleton's unsettling worldview hangs together so well (especially with titles like "Delivered in a Firm Unyielding Way Lingering For Just a Bit Too Long to Communicate the Message 'I Own You'"), but hang it does--in much the same way as the CD cover art's apparent suicide, suspended from the ceiling.
The Paper Chase: John Congleton (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, sampler, sequencer, Theremin); Youmans (cello); Kirkpatrick (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Weaver (bass guitar); Dalton (drums).
Clash (magazine) (p.118) - "Screeching violins and discordant piano noises create a spooky, haunted house atmosphere....Perhaps most fascinating of all though is the challenging, multi-layered nature of the album as a whole..." Now You Are One Of Us music CDs
$28.55 The second in this series of rare and unreleased Beatles recordings covers the group's famed middle period. It features outtakes, demos and alternate versions of songs from the albums HELP!, RUBBER SOUL, REVOLVER, SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND and MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. There are also three previously-unreleased Beatles songs from 1965, several live cuts and the second of the Beatles' new recordings, "Real Love," which began as a late-'70s John Lennon demo and was completed by the remaining Beatles in 1995.
Additional personnel includes: Mal Evans (spoken vocals); Brian Jones (saxophone); George Martin (harmonium).
Principally recorded at EMI Studios, London, England between February 16, 1965 and April 30, 1969; and live at ABC Theatre, Blackpool, England, Shea Stadium, New York, New York and Nippon Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan in 1965 and 1966. "Real Love" recorded in New York, New York circa 1979 and in Sussex, England in February 1995. Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor and track-by-track annotations by Mark Lewisohn.
There is also lots of clowning around on ANTHOLOGY: 2--most prominently, John and Paul giggling their way through an early vocal take of "And Your Bird Can Sing." But the bulk of ANTHOLOGY: 2 isn't genius at play; it's genius at work. ...

Now You Are One Of Us CD music
$11.09 The 13th Floor Elevators might have been remembered simply as one-hit wonder of the '60s--the Texas equivalent of the Count 5, for example--had it not been for two things. First, they were the only rock band in history to feature a guy playing a continuous obligato on electric jug, which added a deeply weird element to even their most straightforward three-chord rockers. Second, and perhaps more importantly, they were fronted by a genuine howling weirdo and cult figure-to-be, the incomparable Roky Erickson.
Roky, who took more acid trips than Jerry Garcia had hot meals, was nonetheless a gifted songwriter who sang every word (however bizarre) as if his life depended on it. This debut album--reputedly the first rock album on which the word 'psychedelic' appears-- features the band's sole national hit, the garage punk classic "You're Gonna Miss Me." The other material here is nearly as good, however, including the Stones-y "Reverberation" and the oft-covered "Fire Engine."
Did the 13th Floor Elevators invent psychedelic rock? Aficionados will be debating that point for decades, but if Roky Erickson and his fellow travelers into inner space weren't there first, they were certainly close to the front of the line, and there are few albums from the early stages of the psych movement that sound ...
