The release of THE WEE HOURS REVUE, from North Carolina five-piece Roman Candle, comes accompanied by much anticipation from fans and critics alike. During the years that the album drifted from one label to another, the band acquired a devoted following for their live performances at venues like Merlefest and SXSW. Roman Candle's flexible, soulful sound stretches from the alt-country of bands like Golden Smog and the Old 97's to the loose, confident country sounds of classic rock bands like the Band and the Rolling Stones. "New York This Morning" is a sweet and breezy two-step, "Something Left To Say" a lilting melodic guitar number, and "Another Summer" is bluesy, snarling rock in the vein of the Black Crowes. THE WEE HOURS REVUE is an album that more than lives up to the high expectations of Roman Candle's fans. North Carolina five-piece Roman Candle ended up sitting on their debut album for a lot longer than most folks would been willing to tolerate; the bulk of The Wee Hours Revue was cut in 2002 for an upstart indie label under the title Hey Pop, with an overhauled version finally seeing a proper release through V2 in 2006. However, the results were worth the weight. Combining rootsy country-flavored melodies with a soul-powered vocal punch and the emphatic dynamics of a crack rock & roll band, The Wee Hours Revue captures the sound of a group with the talent to go in any number of musical directions and the courage to follow several different paths without losing touch with their muse or their identity in the process. At its best, The Wee Hours Revue suggests what Whiskeytown could have been if ego and lack of discipline hadn't gotten in the way; Skip Matheny's vocals capture some of Ryan Adams' insouciance but with a good bit more power and a passion that doesn't give way to arrogance, while Matheny and Nick Jaeger's guitars lock together with precision and fire. Skip's siblings, Timshet on keyboards and Logan on drums, make it clear the talent runs in the family (Jeff Crawford's fine bass work rounds out the band), and the songs, ranging from the shimmering surfaces of "Winterlight" and the big-city reverie of "New York This Morning" to the hard-boogie strut of "I've Got a Reason," offer an eclectic variety of sounds while still carrying the group's own spirit and style at all times. The Wee Hours Revue is an impressive debut from a group with plenty to offer, and hopefully we won't have to wait four years for Roman Candle's next album to find its way into stores. ~ Mark Deming The Wee Hours Revue Music | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs | | Label | V2 | | Orig Year | 2006 | | All Time Sales Rank | 29727 | | CD Universe Part number | 7103293 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jun 20, 2006 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Chris Stamey; Roman Candle |

$12.79 The Who: Roger Daltrey (vocals); Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Entwistle (vocals, horns, bass); Keith Moon (drums). Recorded between 1964 & 1978. Personnel: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Roger Daltrey (vocals, harmonica); John Entwistle (vocals, keyboards); Keith Moon (vocals, drums). Recording information: England. Photographer: Graham Hughes. Following their "farewell tour," MCA released yet another Who collection, the first one ever titled Greatest Hits. The compilers don't take the title literally. Sure, many of the group's biggest hits ("Substitute," "My Generation," "Magic Bus," "Pinball Wizard," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Love, Reign O'er Me," "Squeeze Box," "Who Are You") are here, but nearly as many are missing, including "Behind Blue Eyes," "Pictures of Lily," ...

The Wee Hours Revue
$13.09 Full Title - Everything Is Good Here/Please Come Home. The third installment from M. Gira's post-Swans band - quiet, loud, delicate and insane. Digipak. Young God. 2003.
Angels Of Light include: Michael Gira. Personnel: Michael Gira (vocals, various instruments, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica, piano); Thor Harris (vocals, dulcimer, piano, vibraphone, percussion); Larry Mullins (vocals, Farfisa, synthesizer, vibraphone, drums, percussion); Devendra Banhart, Siobhan Duffy (vocals); Christopher Hahn (electric guitar, lap steel guitar); David Coulter (banjo, violin); Kevin O'Connor (banjo); Eszter Balint (violin); David Garland (flute, accordion); Larry Moses (trumpet); Steve Moses (trombone); Joe McGinty (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards). Recording information: BC Studios, Brooklyn, NY (03/2002-10/2002); Palace Seizures, Brooklyn, NY (03/2002-10/2002). Director: DC. Arranger: DC. Having created some of the strongest music in his life on the previous Angels of Light album, Michael Gira maintains the winning streak but explores a newer, more controlled delicacy on Everything is Good Here. It's hardly a new move for him, of course, but in ways this album, the third in the Angels of Light guise, finds his extremes of harrowing, wrenching music and performance, and a calmer, almost mystical approach, more integrated than ever before. The drama in his vocals and arrangements are more than ever implicit instead of directly blasting, to beautiful and powerful effect. "Palisades" sets this tone from the start, incorporating everything from backing choirs and dank, dark riffs to the quietest of arrangements into one cohesive performance. Other songs that hit the balance just right include "Nations," with its quiet, persistent vibes part a counterbalance to the more insistent guitars and piano, and the incredible "Sunset Park," with the words delivered as a steady mantra over a surging, slow burn performance that feels like a triumphant march. Gira's gift for ritualistic theatricality certainly hasn't left him, as even a casual listen to the increasingly frenetic "All Souls' Rising" -- keep an ear out for the almost ...
| | Betty Johnson Love Walked In CD (2000)
The Wee Hours Revue
$15.05 This is the third album erstwhile vocalist Betty Johnson -- who has returned to singing after a 33-year leave of absence -- has released of material from her early years of performing. The album is a compilation of her work during the 1960s, and differs from other Johnson reissues in that it occasionally approaches jazz, as she turns to classic standards rather than the pop material of the day. (And some of the latter -- like "The Tea in China" -- even acknowledges the singer's flirtation with folk music.) Standards provide the opportunity for Johnson to be more expressive and expansive in her delivery, sometimes sounding like Lee Wiley. She takes full advantage of this opportunity with her clear soprano voice and excellent phrasing. But, like her earlier releases, Love Walked In is a bit unusual. There is a full menu of 27 tunes, but none of them last longer than two minutes! Also, the very good musicians backing her (the Metropolitan Jazz Quartet) are not identified, although we know they are from New York and that the guitarist is George Barnes, who is critical to establishing the occasional jazzy ambience. His playing meshes well with Johnson, particularly on "These Foolish Things." It's too bad we don't know who the other musicians are, since they do more ...
