Alabama's Sailcat only released one album and only had one hit, both titled Motorcycle Mama. The song, of course, is better-remembered than the album, as it was one of many hazy oddities that played on AM pop radio during the early '70s and subsequently was recycled on many CDs of '70s hits (it was also covered by the Sugarcubes for the 1990 Elektra tribute, Rubaiyat), and the sunny, hippie-dippie vibe of the single is indeed memorable, but not a very good indication of the rest of the LP, which is hippie but also more trippy than the hit indicates. Take into heavy consideration that the liners call Motorcycle Mama a concept album, which very well may be true but it's hard to discern since the concept is fuzzy -- it vaguely involves highways and thieves in the South, but it's hard to piece together the strands into a story. More importantly, Motorcycle Mama feels like a concept album, due more to its puffed-up progginess than its songs. As soon as "Rainbow Road" fades in with its circular fiddle and banjo, it's clear that Sailcat aren't a gritty Southern band and that's a perception proven true by the rest of the record. Which isn't to say there aren't soul and grooves here: they are certainly the product of Muscle Shoals and churn out some good, gritty Southern rock, as when "Rainbow Road" finally kicks into gear or when they slide into the greasy jokes of "B.B. Gunn" or lay into some driving rock & roll on "Highway Rider/Highway Riff." But even that five-minute jam offers ample proof that Sailcat are no simple Southern rock outfit, as it is punched along by jazzy horns and waves of organ before it descends into tinkling piano and strings that are straight out of a 101 Strings LP. That kind of fuzzy eclecticism keeps things interesting on Motorcycle Mama, as it also encompasses hippie folk, sunshine harmonies, and multi-part suites borrowed from prog rock. These are all elements that, when put together, are pretty interesting, but they don't necessarily gel into a cohesive LP -- or in several cases, not even a cohesive song. Despite this, the rampant imagination and gutbucket hard rock on display make Sailcat'sMotorcycle Mama one of the more fascinating one-shot wonders of the early '70s: maybe not a record that would be played often, but certainly one worth hearing once. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Motorcycle Mama album
$10.19 This is a transitional Al Stewart album. After stretching the boundaries of song length and language with Love Chronicles, he was in a something of a holding pattern on Orange, without any obviously profound inspiration or moments of daring. "Songs Out of Clay," however, does reveal the first signs of the mix of acoustic and electric guitar sounds that he would perfect on his next album, Past, Present and Future, two years later, while ...
| | Al Stewart 24 Carrots CD (1980) Bonus Tracks
Motorcycle Mama CD music
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the departure of producer Alan Parsons, who collaborated with Stewart on his mid-'70s triptych of masterpieces. In truth, 24 Carrots isn't far removed from those high ...

| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Motorcycle Mama CD music
$14.42 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's ...

Motorcycle Mama music CDs
$12.95 Collectables' four-volume For Lovers Only series is an enjoyable, if unexceptional, set that collects some of the most romantic pop, R&B, and doo wop singles from the late '50s and early '60s. | | Mon Frere Real Vampires CD (2005)
Motorcycle Mama album
$6.49 Featuring Nouela Johnston of Say Hi (To Your Mom) and People Eating People!Mon Frere's dance rock comes off like a musical graphic novel; futuristically poppy and full of brash punk energy, mixing dance, heavy rock and jazz into something else. Formed in a subdivision basement by a trio of high-school outcasts, Mon Frere is the kind of band that makes kids clap-their-hands-say-yah and parents scratch their heads. Mon Frere stunned the Seattle music scene in 2005, spewing forth from the suburban lawns of Mountlake Terrace, WA, and transforming from underage unknowns to one of the scene's most exciting draws. Thanks to tastemakers like KEXP DJ John Richards and a rapidly growing fanbase, Mon Frere gained entrance to the hallowed halls of the Northwest's legendary rock clubs, capping their first year as a band with a packed show at Bumbershoot, the Nation's largest annual music festival, and shows with Vendetta Red, Minus The Bear, The Gossip, U.S.E., and Visqueen, to name a few. Mon Frere's quirky-yet-dark pop sensibility permeates their sound. Frontwoman Nouela Johnston's voice is both buttery and brutal, able to mowing down an advancing army or seduce a ghost. Her playfully fractured synths run circles around Kyle Swisher's ...
