George Brassens was France's finest post-war singer/songwriter, a uniquely and unquantifiably Parisian phenomenon. Armed with an acoustic guitar (at most, late in his career, a string trio) and a deceptively simple baritone voice, he set people whistling in the street lovesongs (risqué and otherwise) of affable idiosyncracy and settings of poets from Villon to Aragon. Why is he unknown outside France? He spent a lifetime avoiding stardom, but also his brilliant lyrics are totally untranslatable, and though his best melodies are unforgettably beguiling and his voice guitar unequalled models of how to support a lyric, those lyrics are crucial. Some of his very finest songs (including the Villon and Aragon settings) are missing here, and some included are below his best. But second-best Brassens still towers over Jacques Who? and all his ilk. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music Les Copains D'Abord Music Georges Brassens Les Copains D'Abord Songs | 1. | La Mauvaise Réputation | $0.99 | |

Celtic and jam band aesthetics merge to create a meandering, somewhat monochromatic impression throughout this live double-CD set. The first is the lesser element; emerald accoutrements pop up rarely in these largely acoustic mixes, and when they do they seem more decorative than essential. It would be easy, for example, to erase the prominent tin whistle part in "Wandrin' Around" without substantially affecting the song's integrity or impact. No vibrato and not much dynamic expression infect the solo and harmony vocals; even on the a cappella studio-recorded "Gloryland" the rustic Appalachian echoes come across as correct but somewhat bloodless. The band, similarly, purrs contentedly, revealing no rough edges and betraying few outbursts of passion. (The arco bass solo and snappy hand percussion that kick off "American Tale" offer stimulating contrast to this otherwise mellow flow.) Even the audience seems pretty sedate, silent during the music and warmly appreciative, though not exactly hysterical, between tracks. With plenty of familiar ...

Les Copains D'Abord music CDs
$27.79 UNION was a milestone event in the history of Yes. For the first time in the group's long existence, the majority of its various members came together under a single banner. The result is a huge collection of songs that sounds like modern Yes with a touch of the '70s art rock that originally secured the band's legendary status. However, while it appears on the surface that all eight past and present members recorded the songs together, it was actually a conglomeration of the Trevor Rabin-era Yes and the sophomore Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe projects that were already underway.
The electronic textures emanating from keyboard masters Rick Wakeman and Tony Kaye, the powerful guitar work by Rabin and Steve Howe, and the massive percussion barrage concocted by Bill Bruford and Alan White all add up to the most aurally magnificent ...
| | Athanator The Perfect Enemy CD (2007)
Les Copains D'Abord songs
$14.79 Since their humble start in 1989 as an underground band from Medellin, Colombia, ATHANATOR have managed to establish themselves as one of America's top thrash metal acts through hard work, relentless concerts, and consistently solid albums. What has set ATHANATOR apart from the rest of the metal scene since the very beginning is their use of death obsession and imagery in lyrics and artwork, as well as a talent for writing epic, memorable melodies, which underline their solemn yet killer approach to heavy music. The band went through the usual demo recordings and line-up changes in the beginning stages, but in 2000 made its first mark with the CD "Rise the Death". A one-off affair with (of all places) Colombia's LIXO Sonido + Discos, this CD did not only plant ATHANATOR's flag in the underground metal landscape, but also gained the band a multi-fan around the world. In 2002 a tribute to Slayer called "Rise the Slaughter", led the band as the first thrash metal act honoured by metal fanzines, e-zines and every metal head in the town. They have been in many sold-out concerts catching fans, performing on many gigs including a support show for German Thrashers: DESTRUCTION. Ateneo Porfirio Barba Jacob Corporation signed a deal with ATHANATOR to release at mid 2004, their "Earth of Blood" album. 15 tunes from the old school thrash metal with new sounds supported by promotional video clips and many shows ...
