The most commercially accessible of Van Morrison's '70s albums, WAVELENGTH is not an artistic compromise, but rather an expansion of Morrison's sound beyond the blues-based, horn-band approach. With the keyboard work of Camel's Peter Bardens and The Band's Garth Hudson, the arrangements take a step toward rock's electronic future without breaking Morrison's well-established ties to it's past. Basically a continuation of the ideas explored on the previous year's aptly titled A PERIOD OF TRANSITION, the album relies largely on groove-heavy '70s-style R&B tunes that overflow with soul, like "Hungry For Your Love" and "Take It Where You Find It." The title tune, which proved to be quite radio-friendly, points the way to new pop directions.
Wavelength essentially picks up where A Period of Transition left off, offering a focused, full-bodied alternative to that record's warmly fuzzy lack of direction. "If Looks Could Kill" is one of the highlights from Camera Obscura's wonderful album Let's Get Out of This Country. The pounding percussion, VU-guitars, and tremendous melody make it a highlight of 2006 as well. The other two songs are fine B-sides: "Hands Up Baby" is a restrained and atmospheric ballad penned by guitarist Kenny McKeeve, whereas "Alaska"'s an organ-heavy rocker with some nice references to trees (when was the last time you heard anyone singing about sycamores, birches, or hawthorns?) and a solid groove. From a very early age, Shawn Dodd has always known, that singing and performing country music was the thing he wanted most. Born in Austin and then raised in East Texas Shawn grew up in a family that embraced all musical styles but was strongly rooted in country music. His father played guitar and performed for audiences in festivals and at picnics. He often played at home while the family sat around and sang along. It was here that Shawn developed the natural gift of song and a base to grow from. Shawn got his start in music singing the Opry Circuit, from Grapevine, Wylie, down to the Georgetown Opry. He has represented the Fort Worth Songwriter's Association at the "Star Spangled 4th" in Garland, TX as well as other festivals. Shawn regularly performs at the Cowtown Rodeo in the Ft. Worth Stockyards and has competed in the "Colgate Country Showdown", where he was a state finalist in 2003. Since it's release, Shawn's debut album, "State of Mind" has received much praise, including national airplay via the "Lia Show's 15 seconds of Fame", and a 2004 Terry Award ...
