| | Best Of Sam Cooke CD (1962) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Trait Pour Trait CD music
$6.75 This 1965 compilation is the perfect introduction to the soulful pop of Sam Cooke. It contains all of his best-loved songs in their original versions and represents the wide variety of moods the man conjured with his music. His unique vocal style combined the smooth, tasteful pop approach of Nat King Cole with a grittier, more emotive soul sound.
His compositions brought those two worlds together in a similar manner, the worksong providing fodder for the melodic pop of "Chain Gang," for example. "You Send Me" is the ultimate expression of romantic rapture, while "Sad Mood" is the most mournful of lost-love songs. Somehow, even when capturing a sense of celebration ...
| | The Jacksons CD (1976)
Trait Pour Trait music CDs
$6.89 For their first release on Epic Records after leaving Motown and Berry Gordy behind, the newly re-christened Jacksons shuffled brothers, as Jermaine left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Randy, a younger, yet-unseen brother. After a phenomenally successful seven years as the Jackson Five, the group's second incarnation released its eponymous debut album in 1976, helmed by songwriter/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.
THE JACKSONS finds the group at an interesting crossroads. As the Jackson 5, they were able to kick up a youthful ruckus with their music but here seem to be undergoing growing pains. They succeed mostly by grafting their smooth sounding groove onto the material (they scored two big dance hits with "Enjoy Yourself" and "Show You the Way to Go"). "Keep on Dancing," with Michael's growls and imminent signs of maturity, is a standout, as is "Strength of One Man," which gives all the brothers an opportunity to sing inspirational lead vocals. For a super group still a few years away from unleashing ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Trait Pour Trait songs
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record which somehow transcends cookie-cutter.
In 2009, Z-Ro's loyal fan base expected Heroin, a two-CD set announced the previous year, but instead they got Cocaine, a one-CD version with many songs that already appeared on the mixtape Codeine. Confusing, and rumors of the rapper's difficulties with the Rap-A-Lot label top it all off, but the good news is that Cocaine is no great disappointment. It does feel a bit disjointed and perhaps cobbled together from tracks recorded for the mythological Heroin, but fans of the rapper spend enough time in the mixtape world that any semi-sensibly laid-out Z-Ro release is a step up, and Cocaine is just that. Highlights include "Quarterback," which is filled with football metaphors; ...

| | Metalux Waiting For Armadillo CD (2004)
Trait Pour Trait music CDs
$13.15 Waiting for Armadillo doesn't make much sense as a title -- something about an armadillo queen is drenched in reverb and hard to decipher in the first song, "Flexi - Armadillo," but after repeated listening the idea of the armored rodent's arrival becomes a foreboding event. Haunting keyboards, electronic buzzes, and disembodied, filtered vocal howls are pitted against drum-machine dirges, shaggy guitars, and video game bleeps in the cavernous sound that Metalux have created for their second full-length release. The vocals are dire in the way that Arto Lindsay's were with DNA, building tension in their command of space; however, Metalux are more inclined to let the tension remain rather than slicing it into no wave bits like their predecessors. The synth lines build crooked spines for many of the songs, most of which are without percussion, recalling the Residents and the mutant song forms that they often use. Occasional Metalux ...
