| | Luiz Gayotto O Catarina CD - Import Luiz Gayotto Discography of CDs
The first album by Luiz Gayotto, O Catarina reveals an inspired lyricist -- if even too much influenced by the vanguarda paulistana (Sao Paulo's vanguard), and still without many new things to declare. The best track is "Desculpa," with the colloquial tone of the lyrics (a contribution by Rumo's Luiz Tatit) reinforced by the spoken speech (a renewal of Stravinsky via the same Tatit) and feeble synth sounds and a flesh and blood saxophonist trying to reproduce the findings of Arrigo Barnabé. "Na Taberna" has the instigating Caribbean sounds but remains an unfulfilled promise due to the weak melody. Simple, straightforward melodies, pop arrangements with sparse electronics complete the picture of a sincere composer still in search of a personal voice. ~ Alvaro Neder Luiz Gayotto O Catarina Songs | 1. | Vaidade |

| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
O Catarina CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a ...
| | Mariza Terra CD (2008) Bonus Track
O Catarina music CDs
$13.49 Terra feels like an attempt to move Mariza into the musical mainstream. She's already established herself at the forefront of fado, as one of the leading performers of the emotive Portuguese style, and there's no doubt she possesses a wonderful voice. But the addition of several guests, such as Chucho Valdés, Ivan Lins, and Tito Paris (among others) seems to open up the seams between fado and ...

Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York)
An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, ...

| | Dan Arcamone Trioisms CD (2008)
O Catarina CD music
$12.55 Dan Arcamone BioSwinging, soulful, energetic, gifted, flawless, these are just some of the words that have been used by critics to describe Connecticut based guitarist Dan Arcamone. Equally at home as a composer and performer, Arcamone's powerful yet elegant style has been winning over audiences and critics alike. Drawing influences from the likes of Pat Metheny, John Coltrane, and Michael Brecker, Arcamone has developed a playing style that All About Jazz calls "intellectually stimulating" and "high energy." A diverse player, Arcamone is equally at home creating arcing melodies on a ballad as he is taking the reins on a burning, rock-fused solo, qualities that have caused him to make waves as both a leader and sideman. After building his reputation as a sideman, most notably with the Damon Grant Project with whom he recorded the album Sonidos Nuevos, Arcamone can now be found leading his own trio consisting of Rich Zurkowski bass and Tom Ash drums. The group, which performs Arcamone's original, modern-jazz compositions, is as adventurous as it is polished. Melded together with a sense of communication that can only be developed by long nights on the bandstand. His debut album, Trioisms, immediately turned heads and brought critical attention to Arcamone the player and composer. All About Jazz described the album as "genre-defying" and "ground breaking," two monikers that Arcamone wears well. Drawing from a diverse array of genres such as rock, pop, jazz and the avant-garde, Arcamone's musical style ...
