Hip Hop Futurista CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic ...

$14.79 This first statement by Shawn Loescher shows the emergence of one of the most talented alto sax players of his generation -- a musician in full command of his instrument and with a clear musical vision. Opening appropriately with Lee Konitz's "Subconscious-Lee," the young saxophonist does not appear as an imitator of his illustrious predecessor, but as a voice just as unique. There are definitely touches of West Coast jazz, but they are charged with emotion and tenderness. One of the main characteristics of Loescher's music is his effective use of counterpoints as his alto patterns during the bass solos bear witness. Loescher's original approach never sacrifices the melody, even when the band takes a composition, such as Richard Rodgers' "No Other Love," at a very slow pace. Loescher delves deep into the essence of the tunes to produce refreshing versions of standards next to which his originals, "Mass-Waltz" and "Love Letter," do not pale. The leader's alto playing is confident and sharp, and his ability to suddenly soar or bring his sound down to a whisper is worth mentioning. Eastern Europe has always been a good purveyor of jazz musicians and Loescher, who was residing in the Czech Republic at the time of this recording, found in bassist Robert Balzar and drummer Marek Patrman two ideally receptive bandmates. Distance showcases a young artist whose creativity and sensitivity should earn him many new listeners. ~ Alain Drouot
Press Quotes:"Loescher's alto soars and sings. His playing combines emotion, creativity and mastery of his instrument, qualities not always found in combination.......The expressive Loescher sound will capture your attention. The two versions of "Body and Soul" are worthy of comparison with those by Serge Chaloff and Coleman Hawkins."- Bill Falconer, November 2001 JazzReview , Review of "dIstance (c. e.)""While conserving themselves to a classic jazz format, the Loescher trio pushes its explorations to the limits. Their concerts are not to be missed."- Patrick Gauthier, August 2001, Journal of Montreal"Loescher knows the music's history, he knows where it comes from. When Loescher comes to play he has something to say."- Dirk Sutro, Los Angeles TimesThe Saxophone Journal - NOV/DEC ...
