A major composer, arranger and pianist who is famousin his native Turkey and becoming increasinglywell-known in the United States, Fahir Atakoglu is atrue original. âIâm a melody man,â he says in modestlydescribing his music. âIf the melody is good, then Idecide who would be best to play it and bring out itsbeauty.âBorn in Istanbul, Atakoglu started having privatelessons on piano when he was seven and beganwriting music in fifth grade. He studied classicalmusic, theory and harmony while keeping his mind opento jazz and other styles. After attending college inLondon where he played some jobs as a musician,Atakoglu returned to Turkey in 1985, at firstperforming with a group of Turkish singers. Thefollowing year he began prolifically writing the musicfor many television commercials. In 1989 Atakoglucomposed the music for a documentary about the recenthistory of Turkey, eventually writing for fourhistoric documentaries. When he released the musicfrom those soundtracks on his first album in 1994, itmade him famous in Turkey. Although he relocated tothe United States during 1989-90, he visits Turkeyoften and his national fame has grown through theyears as he explores a diverse span of music. Some ofhis compositions have been given lyrics and havebecome quite popular in Turkey and Greece.In recent times, Fahir Atakoglu has recorded If (atrio set with bassist Anthony Jackson and drummerHoracio âEl Negroâ Hernandez) and the ballet East SideStory. Both of those projects are relevant in themaking of Istanbul In Blue with Jackson and Hernandezjoining Atakoglu in the quintet, and a few of thethemes from East Side Story being utilized in the morejazz-oriented setting. Istanbul In Blue is a wide-ranging set that at firstseems like jazz/rock fusion, but also includes theinfluences of Turkish music, some acoustic interludes,and sections that are completely unclassifiable.Atakoglu gathered together an all-star cast for theCD. âIn sidemen I look for musicianship, color,original styles and for whatever the musicians canbring to my melodies. I write the melody and sort ofhave an arrangement in mind but, when we rehearse, Ilisten closely to their input and how they interpretthe themes.
