Four years after his debut release, Poly Sci, John Forté returned with a substantially different album titled I, John. Unlike his fun debut, this album takes a more serious approach to music-making. Anyone who heard Poly Sci will find the high level of introspection quite surprising. No longer is Forté partying with the Fugees and rap superstars such as DMX and Fat Joe. Rather, Forté works with co-writer Joel Kipnis and accomplished yet low-profile artists such as Tricky, Esthero, and Herbie Hancock on I, John. Furthermore, he throws the rules out the window, making his own style of music rather than the hot sound of the moment. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Rolling Stone (4/25/02, p.79) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...Forte's near-chanted vocals epitomize rap singsing....I JOHN is one of those rare albums that make most of personal crisis...this was a man of spiritual resources and musical gifts..." Uncut (8/02, p.102) - 3 out of 5 - "...Faith and hope rather than despair and anger are the tone, and the results are rather moving..." CMJ (4/22/02, p.20) - "...Melodic and harmonic...I, JOHN unveils a nostaligic, somewhat wistful Forte....in his autobiographical songs, Forte brings listeners on his journey from highest highs to his lowerst lows..." Purchase I John CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
I John songs
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.

| | Rihanna Rated R CD (2009)
I John music CDs
$14.64 (MP3 Available for Download) "Russian Roulette," released weeks prior to Rated R, just hinted at Rihanna's sudden desire to provoke. Even with the realization that it is metaphorical, the song startles with its hesitant gasps, spinning cylinders, and verses that are glacially paced, where a cold piano line and the slight inflections in Rihanna's voice are front and center. And then there's an audible shudder followed by a discharged bullet -- the abrupt end to one of Rated R's most restrained moments. It's not the only instance where Rihanna's rise in fame, combined with being the victim in the decade's highest-profile felonious assault, added up to a perfect-storm scenario for a creative overhaul. Rated R is more like Good Girl Gone Evil, or Abused Girl Full of Vengeful Rage, not Good Girl Gone Bad, where the only casualties were some dishes. The closest the set gets to upbeat pop is "Rude Boy," and by any standard it is stern; needless to say, there is ...
| | Very Best Of The Spinners CD (1993)
I John songs
$8.19 (MP3 Available for Download) The Spinners were rivaled only by the O'Jays as the greatest Philly soul group, and for that matter the greatest vocal group of the '70s. For listeners who don't want to dig as deeply as the excellent double-CD anthology One of a Kind Love Affair, Rhino's The Very Best of the Spinners is a stellar single-disc career summary that offers a concentrated dose of the group's sweet soul magic. It also serves as a primer on the best work of Thom Bell, Philly soul's "other" great producer besides the legendary Gamble & Huff team. Incredibly, every one of the 16 tracks here -- culled from 1970-1980 -- reached the R&B Top Ten, and half went all the way to number one on either the pop or R&B lists. As this collection demonstrates, the Spinners' massive popularity ...
| | Uncanned! The Best Of Canned Heat CDs (1994)
I John album
$10.29 Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (February 1994, Tower Mastering, Hollywood, California).
For all but the completists, this anthology should more than suffice as an apt compact-disc retrospective of Canned Heat's releases on Liberty Records. To that end, it's a more or less chronological overview of the combo's LPs, commencing with a trio of tunes from a spring 1967 studio session that predates their self-titled debut (1967). Primary is an extended, seven-plus-minute "On the Road Again," losing the trippy pretensions of the more popular version. Rather, it churns and steadily burns throughout, displaying Canned Heat's primordial boogie-fused R&B delivery. The remainder of disc one focuses on the aforementioned Canned Heat (1967), the follow-up Boogie With Canned Heat (1968), and a half-dozen previously unreleased sides, this time from the fall of 1967 with a slightly different lineup that included Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/vocals), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), and Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals). Frank Cook (drums), who had contributed to the band's first effort, was replaced by Adolfo "Fido" de la Parra (drums). It is this aggregate that is considered the core of the "classic" incarnation. They are thoroughly solid, especially on John Lee Hooker's "Whiskey and Wimmen" (sic), a title that would resurface several years later when they faced off with Hooker on Hooker 'n' Heat (1971). Another not-to-be-missed rarity is the nearly ten-minute "Gotta Boogie" jam building off of Hooker's familiar rambling "Boogie Chillen" riff, as it explores some of Canned Heat's trademark instrumental interaction. This is most prominent between Wilson and Hite, and predates "Fried Hockey Boogie," ...
