Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the wealthiest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million people; epicenter of a sprawling empire. The Republic was founded on principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one man to seize absolute control. But now, those foundations are crumbling, eaten away by corruption and excess. After eight years of war, two soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo unwittingly become entwined in the historical events of ancient Rome. Actors: Polly Walker, Ciaran Hinds, James Purefoy, Lindsay Duncan, Kevin Mckidd, Ray Stevenson. A generously budgeted show jointly produced by HBO and the BBC, ROME takes viewers back to 52 BC for a chance to relive the reign of Julius Caesar. The first season revolves around the lives of two Roman soldiers, Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson), who win favor with Caesar (Ciaran Hinds) by defeating a mutinous plot from the devious Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham). This affords the two men a gateway into the lives of Rome's ruling classes, and so the season unfolds, with intricately woven plots, fine acting, and stunning recreations of the ancient city, to provide a thoroughly engrossing television show. Details have been painstakingly pored over to ensure accuracy, so both history buffs and viewers less versed in the ways of Caesar should find something to enjoy here. This release contains the entire first season of the show. Rome - The Complete First Season Movie Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) An Exceptional Journey Unflinchingly gritty and violent, outrageously bawdy and unfailingly entertaining, Rome managed to completely captivate and overwhelm me. In every case the acting is superb with truly magnificent performances by Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson, and Polly Walker. And, thanks to the efforts of Terence Stamp and the producers, Rome sets a new standard as the most historically accurate and well-fleshed out film to ever be set in ancient times. Rome is, without a doubt, the best film (series or no) I’ve ever seen. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Submitted by Taig Stewart (Orem, UT) Was This Review Helpful? Best TV Dramatization of Ancient Rome Since I Claudius HBO did well to partner with the BBC. At first I thought an HBO dramatization of the rise and fall of ancient Rome could not possibly do justice to the subject matter, at least not in the same way that the BBC did back in the mid-70's with their adaptation of Robert Graves novel I Claudius. In my opinion, I Claudius is still by far the superior series, but only because it has stood the test of time. I can watch it as easily now as I did back then and marvel at the rich story and superb acting talent. None the less, Rome holds its own in both story and acting talent, and adds the gritty embelishments that only HBO can deliver. Think of Rome as an ancient version of The Sopranos with a splash of The History Channel. Submitted by Static (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Rome - The Complete First Season review
$11.79 Adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novels, SIN CITY is Robert Rodriguez's striking film noir infused with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally nighttime and everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright color for dazzling punctuation, Rodriguez employs green screen techniques and paints a backdrop around each scene, using Miller's co-direction as his cue to match the original setting as closely as possible. Three stories weave together, occasionally overlapping. With lines delivered flatly in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love, loss, and being preternaturally tough. In the most caustically dramatic segment, Mickey Rourke plays the fearlessly ...
