The true story of the 1988 football season of the Permian High Panthers of Odessa, Texas. In small town Texas, the entire community lives and dies with its local high school football team. The town shuts down on Friday nights and everyone goes to the games. During the 1988 season, the Panthers struggle with ongoing personal conflicts on their way through the state playoffs. Each game is one more fleeting moment of the high point of their lives. Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Derek Luke, Jay Hernandez. Based on the best-selling book by H.G. Bissinger, Peter Berg's gritty, powerful drama tells the true story of a small Texas town in which high school football is the only thing that matters. Set in 1988, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS opens on the first day of practice for the Odessa Permian Panthers. Under intense pressure and scrutiny from the town's residents, head coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) nonetheless maintains a calm façade. His star player, Boobie Miles (Derek Luke), is a running back with unlimited potential, but the rest of the team is undersized and lacking killer instinct--especially quarterback Mike Winchell (Lucas Black), who's shy and short of confidence, and Don Billingsley (Garrett Hedlund), who is tormented by his father (Tim McGraw) for being too soft. When Boobie goes down on opening day with a career threatening knee injury, the season appears to be over. But Gaines won't give up, and neither will the rest of his feisty players.
Billy Bob Thornton delivers another outstanding performance in Berg's impassioned drama, as do the film's young actors (most notably Luke, Black, and Hedlund). Tobias Schliessler's fuel-injected photography and Explosion in the Sky's electrifying score make FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS an even more spectacular movie-going experience. THEATRICAL RELEASE: OCTOBER 8, 2004 Friday Night Lights Reviews: "The movie's football scenes are both realistic and exciting, with genuine moments of suspense
-- Chris Cronis, Premiere "Imbued with the aching sadness of an end-of-summer's evening, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS has more in common with Peter Bogdanovich's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW...than other American football films..."
-- Ali Jaafar, Sight and Sound "[With] hard-tackling action, this is a solid effort from actor-turned-director Peter Berg."
-- Andrew Sumner, Uncut "[A] stringent, stirring real-life drama....Directed with smart, documentary-style briskness..."-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "One of the best football movies ever, NIGHTS in the end celebrates the game."-- Mike Clark, USA Today "FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is uplifting and troubling, partly because it is more honest than most sports movies about the high cost and short life span of high school football glory."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "The FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS team has invested a lot of energy in the authenticity of the on-field action that dominates the film."-- Kenneth Turan, USA Today "Thornton gets inside the coach's skin. It's a subtle, soulful performance..."

LIGHTS OUT! Not the best sports movie I've ever seen, but it's decent. The last half hour is good, the rest of the movie
is pretty boring. Submitted by Lance (Lawrenceville NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
An A-list football movie!! Friday Night Lights is a truthful and superb football film. You can feel the intensity on the field, you can see it through the vibrant and kenetic editing style, and the best part of Tim McGraw's performance is you don't know you're watching Tim MrGraw. The film's soundtrack is haunting and features an echoing guitar that sweeps through the filmscape like a warm texas wind; and then you're punched by sudden flares of rock when you watch the players take the field for their games. Billy Bob Thornton Stars as a coach-under-seige who wants his team of young players to be great by showing them they can be perfect inside. I'm not a football fan but I love football movies. See this film! It's one of the finest football movies ever made!! Submitted by seran_caski (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Friday Night Lights video
$23.95 The events of September 11 left an indelible mark on most Americans, and certainly on those in the New York City area. Yet as fresh as the images seem, it's easy to forget the actual grit, sacrifice, and uncertainty of that day. Director Oliver Stone captures the essence of 9/11 by focusing on the true story of two Port Authority Police Department officers who were trapped beneath the wreckage of the fallen World Trade Center.
Veteran officer Sergeant John McLoughlin (Nicholas Cage) and his team, including rookie Will Jimeno (Michael Pena) are gathering equipment to enter the burning Twin Towers when the concourse comes crashing down around them. Twenty feet below the surface, pinned by debris and unable to reach anyone by radio, the officers must rely on their own will--and on each other--to ...

Friday Night Lights DVD
$23.85 In this remake of the classic 1953 Andre de Toth film that starred Vincent Price, horrors abound in a creepy wax museum. A group of road-tripping Florida teenagers (Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Paris Hilton, Robert Ri'chard, Jared Padalecki, and Jon Abrahams) stop to camp near a small town where an abandoned wax museum draws their curiosity. Upon exploring the scary cobwebbed space, they find that the figures are not only eerily lifelike, but that the entire museum--floor to ceiling--is actually made of wax. If that wasn't enough to scare them, they encounter a couple of very unsettling characters who seem to be the only people around for miles. One is a blood-splattered redneck who collects roadkill, dumping the bodies of dead deer into a fetid carcass swamp. The other is Bo (Brian Van Holt), a gas station attendant who lures the kids ...

Friday Night Lights video
$40.65 In the years since his novel DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? was brought to the screen as BLADE RUNNER (1982), Philip K. Dick's paranoid, futuristic works have frequently made the same leap---sometimes as brainy puzzlers (OPEN YOUR EYES, A SCANNER DARKLY), but more often as star-powered action vehicles (TOTAL RECALL, PAYCHECK). NEXT (based very loosely on Dick's short story "The Golden Man") falls squarely in the latter category, with always-game Nicolas Cage as Cris Johnson, a man with the ability to see two minutes into the future. Afraid that all sorts of frightening demands will be made on him if the true scope of his ability becomes known, Johnson limits the use of his powers to a hokey, third-rate ...
