Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Special Edition Billy Wilder's classic noir, a familiar brew of lust, larceny, and lethal intentions, stars Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck as a hot-blooded couple. Framed in flashback, the story is told by the dying Walter Neff (MacMurray), beginning with his first meeting with the seductive Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck) during a routine renewal of her husband's car insurance. After some flirtation she arranges a meeting without her husband, where she asks about an accident policy to be bought without her husband's knowledge. Although repulsed by the implications of her suggestions, his obsession with Phyllis leads Neff to contemplate the possibility of finding a way to kill her husband while making his death look like an accident. After she comes to his apartment, the insurance salesman finally agrees to become involved in the murder, and the two of them begin methodically working out the details. After they dispose of Dietrichson, Neff learns more than he wanted about Phyllis' unsavory past, but realizes he's now too involved to extricate himself. He's also concerned about his a boss, Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson), an omniscient insurance investigator who has taken over the case. DOUBLE INDEMNITY is brilliant noir, among the best of the genre, with a byzantine yet utterly plausible plot, stylized hard-boiled dialogue by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, and three terrific performances by Stanwyck, MacMurray, and Robinson. DOUBLE INDEMNITY was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1992.
Other films written by novelist Raymond Chandler include AND NOW TOMORROW; THE BLUE DAHLIA, from his own story; and THE UNSEEN.
The story of DOUBLE INDEMNITY was inspired by the notorious Snyder-Gray murder that took place in Queens Village, New York, in the 1920s. Albert Snyder was bludgeoned to death by his wife, Ruth, and her lover, Judd Gray, in order to collect his insurance money.

Double Indemnity Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) OFTEN IMITATED, NEVER SURPASSED!! This is the ultimate film noir to surpass them all!! Although filmed in the 40's yet it gets better with each passing decade! Often imitated, in fact in the late 50's there was an Egyptian Movie entitled "For the Sake of a Woman" (Omar Shariff had the leading part) which was an exact photocopy of this masterpiece, but they will never ever make a similar gem. Don't dare to miss it!! Submitted by y.ben-david (Givatayim, Israel.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
You'll Like This One Any fan of film noir should own this movie. From its perfectly interpreted James M. Cain California locations to its dialogue crackling with Hays Office era sexual innuendo, this is among the best films of its kind. Barbara Stanwyck is a textbook femme fatale (especially in the car as her husband is murdered) and Edward G. Robinson must have written the chapter on wry wit by his performance as wily insurance investigator Keyes. Fred MacMurray may be a bit wooden in some scenes, but he more than makes up for it by his expressions during the dialogue in the first scene at the Dietrichson house as Stanwyck descends the stairs in her ankle bracelet.
A good quality print of this film was a long time coming. (It was previously available only in a scratchy sounding version with Chinese subtitles.) The extra documentary is fun, too. Submitted by lcella9370 (New York City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Double Indemnity in deed... You've either seen it, read the reviews and waited just as long as the rest of us for a release of this classic on DVD, so ENJOY ... the wait is OVER! The studio thoughtfully includes the 1973 remake on a separate disc for the purchase price. Both prints are superb, but you'll soon discover that the bonus wasn't necessary. One of the BEST Film Noir's made! Excellent tale of how unbridled lust and greed can make a seemingly nice normal person do terrible things. The story reaches out and grabs you. When watching the cool, calm, collected murders start to sweat and slowly unravel, you find you NEED to know what's going to happen next! Like all film noirs there are no hero's but you find yourself rooting for someone anyway. The movie may been made over 50 years ago but the human condition - desire, lust, jealousy, greed, money, murder, desperation, fear... never gets old. Interesting, but... I think Fred MacMurray was the wrong choice as the bad guy & there wasn't a hero! Who do you root for? Submitted by a reviewer (Costa Rica) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$19.29 Director Kristian Levring, in this Dogme 95-inspired, 1920s period melodrama, provides a chilling look at the power of greed and sex. Seeking to make a quick fortune and to carry on an unconventional relationship, Sarah Morris (Janet McTeer, who cowrote the script) and her younger lover Hamish (J.J. Field) travel to the jungle to survey land for an English trading company. Instead of an exotic hideaway, the pair discovers a remote camp where the residents, after decades in the jungle, have become preoccupied with seizing control of the company fortune. Shrewish Mrs. Jones (Brenda Fricker) maintains tight control--doting on her sycophant nephew Norton (Philip Jackson), and constantly belittling the others, including her socially stunted son William (Tony Maudsley). Sarah and Hamish quickly find themselves in a Joseph Conrad-esque hell, and when Hamish falls ill and the company's money runs out, Sarah finds herself faced with a life-altering moral decision.
Using minimal lighting, spare sets and costume design, and slow pacing, director Levring creates a claustrophobic ...

Double Indemnity video
$12.85 Director Ichiro Itano presents a hellish vision of the afterlife in the brutal horror anime series GANTZ. High school student Kei and his childhood friend Kato are helping a hobo who has fallen onto the subway tracks when they are run over and violently decapitated by an oncoming train in a spectacularly grisly fashion. Transported to a strange post-death limbo, the pair find themselves in a barren room overlooking Tokyo with a motley group of strangers--including two hotheaded gangsters and a naked girl, whom they immediately try to rape--as well as a mysterious black sphere known as Gantz. Kei and Kato soon discover that they and the room's occupants are all dead and have been brought there by Gantz as part of a secret government plot to kill criminal aliens that roam the earth--and that if they refuse their deadly missions, they face a fate even worse than death. Moody, stylish, and animated with veritable buckets of crimson blood, GANTZ plays like a twisted hybrid of YU YU HAKUSHO and LA FEMME NIKITA, with graphic violence and nudity deemed too graphic to be aired on Japanese television without major edits ...
