World Saxophone Quartet has built a large, impressive and diverse catalog that ranges from the extreme to the relatively accessible. Political Blues falls into the relatively accessible category, but for WSQ's 2006 lineup (Oliver Lake on alto and soprano sax, Bruce Williams on alto and soprano sax, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone sax and David Murray on tenor sax and bass clarinet), relatively accessible doesn't mean unchallenging. In fact, the songs that have lyrics pack a strong sociopolitical punch. The title track (which features Murray on lead vocals) expresses the group's disdain for the administration of President George W. Bush, and "Spy on Me Blues" (with Lake on vocals) is a biting yet humorous commentary on Bush's embarrassing performance during the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans in 2005. But Political Blues isn't strictly an album of protest lyrics; many of the tracks are instrumentals, including Lake's funky "Let's Have Some Fun," Murray's somewhat Ellingtonian "Hal's Blues" and Craig Harris' dusky "Harlem." While some WSQ recordings have favored a saxophone-only policy -- no bass, no drums, no guitar, no brass instruments -- this January 2006 session features several non-sax playing guests. Among them: trombonist Harris, electric bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, drummer Lee Pearson, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and guitarist James Blood Ulmer (who is featured as a singer on a spirited performance of Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy"). Political Blues' mixture of jazz, blues and funk is mildly avant-garde, but it isn't radically avant-garde -- and those who have admired WSQ's spirit of adventure will be happy to know that the saxophonists are still taking chances even at their most accessible. ~ Alex HendersonDown Beat (p.79) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "It's part art, part politics. It's also a lacerating take on the times.....This is protest music straight out of the 1960s..." JazzTimes (p.90) - "[T]he music is anything but downcast. On the contrary, POLITICAL BLUES is a house party wrapped in political opinion." Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.49) - "The group's rage over the current political climate translates into passionate lyrics, but despite the anger behind their endeavors, it's the music that stands out." $13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made of Robert Rucker for his highly energetic ...

| | Y-Not Archives, Vol. 1 CD (2004)
Political Blues
$14.19 In the fickle chasm called rock 'n' roll many bands fantasize about contracts, cash and fame. However the majority are forgotten soon after their birth. YNOT?! did and still continues to avert that consequence. The guys came on strong at their inception in 1987. YNOT?!'s Marco Riva, Steve Wallace, Darryl Joyner, Steve Miller and Paul Lewis provided their fans with a collection of original music that was suprisingly seasoned for a band of recent formation, coupled with a visual element that highlights frontman Paul Lewis' ability to make sure no one stands still. A potent mix of melody, no-nonsense lyrics, passion, and delivery made YNOT?! a serious contender on both college radio and pop charts. They transposed themselves into one of the regions most acclaimed acts - fans frenetically battled for dance space in venues from Manhattan to the Carolinas. YNOT?! was among an endangered breed of ...
