Will Young was growing up. It had been three years since his unexpected win on the first season of Pop Idol and even at the time of his second album, Friday's Child, he had stated his intention to distance himself from the moniker of being a TV reality show winner, especially as the careers of such winners tended to be notoriously short. So there he was on the cover of his third album, Keep On, looking remarkably like the actor Todd Carty, who played the weatherbeaten character of Mark Fowler on BBC-TVs Eastenders. On Keep On, Young was mature enough to write (or at least co-write) most of the tracks, including the first two, "Keep On" and "Switch It On," both quite funky numbers. Then came the album's first ballad, "All Time Love," every bit as tuneful as "Anything Is Possible" or "Evergreen," his debut single and still the best-selling single of the 21st century. There was a mixture of styles on Keep On, from the salsa, holiday-inspired "Happiness" to the Justin Timberlake pastiche of "Ain't Such a Bad Place to Be," on which even the Indian-style intro worked well, to the ballads "Save Yourself," "Who Am I," and the final song, "Home," a haunting atmospheric track co-written by Nitin Sawhney. Keep On ran out of steam near the end with three tracks, "Madness," "All I Want," and "Think About It," all again co-written by Young but nothing more than album fillers, none of them having much of a melody. Three singles were released from Keep On, "Switch It On," "All Time Love," and "Who Am I," all of which either reached or got pretty near the Top Ten, and there were a few other tracks that would have made great singles, too. Altogether an excellent pop album from an artist who was maturing very nicely as the years went by. ~ Sharon Mawer

| | Teena Marie Irons In The Fire CD (1980)
Keep On
$5.85 With her third album, Irons in the Fire, Teena Marie did something that was rare for a female R&B artist -- she handled all of the producing and writing herself. Marie took on a lot of responsibility, and she knew she had done the right thing when the album became both a commercial and artistic triumph. By now, it was common knowledge that Marie was white, something that didn't seem to matter much to the many black R&B fans who bought this recording. Like so much of her work, the irresistible single "I Need Your Lovin'" became a major R&B hit, but didn't do much on pop radio. Interestingly, Marie was having the same problem as Maze & Frankie Beverly in that she could have a gold album without any help from pop audiences. But then, she obviously realized that she didn't need their support in order to be legit. From the seductive "You Make Love Like Springtime" and the sweaty "First Class Love" to the moving title song, everything on this album is a gem. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Chronicles Of Narnia - Music From The BBC Television Series CD (2005)
Keep On
$13.95 This collection's title is a bit of a misnomer, since, in addition to composer Geoffrey Burdon's score for the BBC's CHRONICLES OF NARNIA TV series, this disc also includes Burdon's music for BLEAK HOUSE, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, and other programs. That noted, the songs here are wonderfully orchestrated selections that deftly capture the moods of the attendant dramas.

Personnel: Lesley Garrett (soprano).

| | Kottonmouth Kings Koast II Koast CD (2006)
Keep On
$13.19 Since 1998, Southern California's vibe has been a little bit greener thanks to the stoned antics of heavy metal/hip-hop outfit Kottonmouth Kings. They're like the Insane Clown Posse of potheads, with a fan base that's just slightly less fervent than the Juggalo Army (though that may have something to do with the quantity and quality of weed they smoke). KOAST II KOAST finds the boys back in fine form, producing more of what their constituency has come to expect--"Bong Toke," "Irie Feelin," and "Fat Sack" being prime examples of those very expectations. And with tighter flows and a stronger concentration on the music than on previous efforts, one could almost refer to KOAST II KOAST as the record where the Kings actually earn their place on the throne.

| | As Blood Runs Black Allegiance CD (2006)
Keep On
$11.89 Despite their youth, the members of As Blood Runs Black spent several years digesting various influences and honing their chops before recording their 2006 debut, Allegiance -- a situation which largely explains the contradiction between its advanced musicianship but, at times, both immature and convoluted songwriting. The album's enticing and foreboding intro suggests black metal, yet restlessly assembled ensuing tracks like "In Dying Days," "The Brighter Side of Suffering" and "My Fears Have Become Phobias" quickly alert the listener to expect the unexpected, as the musicians fling themselves around a mosh pit propelled by several different metallic subgenres. The latter track, for instance, is an absolute smorgasbord: following a flurry of death metal riffs with intermittent displays of Cookie Monster grunts and hardcore shout-outs, then launching into a melodious trad metal guitar solo before descending into a blastbeat driven grindcore finale, complete with unintelligible burped vocals. At least the words spouted by all these different voices (and helpfully printed out within) remain relatively consistent with hardcore's usual themes of independent thought and self-empowerment, mixed with a smidgeon of emo-style bitching (a sign of the band's generation, it almost can't be helped). But by the time the album's ten tracks conclude (the second half possessing nowhere near the first half's distinguishing qualities), an overall allegiance (pun intended) to the melodic metalcore clique led by Killswitch Engage and Unearth does become apparent. Ultimately, the band's instrumental prowess is a highlight in itself, and most listeners will find that whatever As Blood Runs Black still lack in terms of ingenious songwriting, they mostly make up for with pure adrenalin. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Quintessence In Blissful Company CD (1969) Import
Keep On
$18.39 While it's easy to dismiss Quintessence's first album, In Blissful Company, as hippie-dippy nonsense, that would be throwing the baby out with the bath water. Granted, there are several moments when the mix of jazz-rock and Indian influence go well over the top, as on "Ganaga Mai," and no one is going to mistake these guys for, say, Shakti. But they were still far ahead of their time, if you consider this from more of a world music perspective. And there's pleasure to be had from "Notting Hill" (in both versions -- the CD appends the very different single version, plus the non-album B-side, "Move Into the Light"). There's no doubt they believed in what they were doing, and lead guitarist Alan Mostert does add some stirring lines into the mix under Raja Ram's vocals and flute. It's certainly pleasant, progressive in its own way, and while there's a certain sloppiness and muddiness to much of the playing (in best hippie fashion), that actually adds to its appeal in a perverse way. They did develop over the course of four more albums, but never became a major attraction, and in some regards this remains a high point. ~ Chris Nickson
2004 reissue of the progressive rock act's 1969 debut album features 10 tracks including 2 bonus tracks, 'Notting Hill Gate' (Single Version) & 'Move Into The Light'. Includes 12-page booklet with extensive liner notes & b&w photos. Digipak. Repertoire.
