Take a huge helping of danceable salsa, mix it with a splash of urban R&B and 70's pop, serve it up with a voice saturated with emotion, and you've got Marc Anthony. His status as a Latin music superstar can only be buoyed by CONTRA LA CORRIENTE, his third Spanish-language salsa album. Anthony covers the dance floor with energetic songs like "Me Voy A Regalar" and "Si Tu Vas," and plunges wholeheartedly into emotional ballads such as "Y Hubo Alguien" with characteristic soulfulness.
This album is in some respects an answer to Anthony's old-school critics, who have objected in the past to his modern take on traditional salsa; CONTRA was recorded in Puerto Rico with the well-known arranger Angel "Cucco" Pena, a collaboration whose result is fresh and innovative, yet strongly resonant of the soneros who have been among Anthony's lifelong influences.

This three-disc set includes more hard Goa trance than is ultimately necessary, making it a daunting and quickly dull listen. In fact, it's hard to even make it through one of this discs, let alone three, as most of this trance is fairly similar in style, blatantly derived from Hardfloor's precedent-setting "Acperiance": A syncopated foundation of 909-style drum kicks over which various acid-like riffs modulate and morph for the duration of the song, while synth washes occasionally filter through, attempting to induce emotive states. In theory, this musical style works ("Acperiance" seems to have aged well); unfortunately though, these producers seem to lack the creativity that it takes to make their music more than generic derivation. So while one of these songs on their own may be impressive (though few here truly are), the amount of duplication from song to song dilutes whatever quality exists. Of course, such generalizations don't entirely hold true for every song over the course of these three discs, but for the most part, there isn't much to get excited about here, especially when what at first seems like ...
