| | Burning Spear (A)Live In Concert 97 CD Burning Spear Discography of CDs
The veteran reggae performer Burning Spear is heard here at the top of his game, performing at the 1997 WOMAD festival backed by a world-class band on a selection of classics including "Slavery Days" and "Marcus Garvey," as well as later songs such as the Grateful Dead-referencing "Play Jerry." The rhythms are energetic, swaying, and punctuated by a sprightly horn section, while the former Winston Rodney belies his four-decade-and-counting music business career by giving his all to songs such as the bubbling "Creation" and the righteous "Red, Green and Gold."
Personnel: Eugene Grey (guitar); James "Hal" Smith (trumpet); Stephen Stewart (keyboards); Nelson Miller (drums).
Recording information: Maritime Hall; WOMAD Festival, Reading, England.

$6.09 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a ...

Although the public has always seen his childhood friend, NBA superstar Allen Iverson, Gracie is the voice behind the image and those who know them, know that ABK is Gracie’s life and his dream. Gracie was raised around music and has been battling other rappers since the 6th grade, when they used to meet in the school bathrooms and challenge each other. He grew up listening to Run-DMC, EPMD, and Kool G Rap and although other artists from Virginia have gained notoriety, Gracie does not want to be compared with them. “Nobody from Newport News has made it in the music business and ABK is going to change that,” Gracie states defiantly.” “People from Bad News have a different story to tell.”After a 1994 stint in jail, Gracie decided to become more serious about his music. “I saw artists like Redman and Wu Tang doing ...
