On his second outing as the frontman of Head Automatica, Glassjaw's Daryl Palumbo abandons DECADENCE's electronica sheen (and, consequently, producer Dan the Automator), opting instead for a catchy, New Wave-inspired vibe. Throughout the album, Palumbo's emotive vocals carry every guitar-heavy tune, whether it's the urgent opener, "Graduation Day," or "Curious," which takes more than a page from Elvis Costello's book. Although some Head Automatica fans maybe perplexed by the group's notable shift in direction, POPAGANDA exceeds its predecessor with a winning power-pop charm.

Spin (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he band's sleazy electronic grooves remain razor sharp." Q (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Palumbo has an unfailing knack for conjuring instant, memorable choruses....[The songs] shimmer with the innocent, sunny exuberance of an '80s Brat Pack movie soundtrack." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.56) - "[T]he songs here are slick and stylishly delivered, highly contagious and express a genuine love and talent for the credible end of recently-retro pop music. Interesting stuff." Head Automatica Popaganda Songs Popaganda Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) Clearly, the producer makes the album First of all, don't pick up this album if you're looking for a follow up to Decadence. Whereas Head Automatica's debut album was a brilliant throwback to sleazy 70's pop, Popaganda is a forgettable attempt at delivering a modern pop rock album. Palumbo's vocals are just about the only things that make any of these tracks stand out; unfortunately, the musical tracks themselves are boring, repetitive and predictable. The stand out track of the album is the Chris Lord Alge mix of Beating Heart Baby, a song that originally appeared on the first album. That alone should tell you to avoid a purchase here. Your money would be better spent on a Men Women and Children album. Submitted by Ryan (Howell, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Annoying The music has been destroyed by Darryl using his voice extremely badly. Unlistenable and very tryhard. Submitted by Peter (Aussie) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Cd Bought In A While :) a lot of people don't like this album as much as their first one, but personally i think it is soo much better. its not hardcore rock at all but it has its own sound which i absolutly love. labelling it as pop though, is probably the stupidest responce i've heard about this album. i never really liked glassjaw, and head automatica's sound is completely different. for my music taste i think that this bands better but i can see how others would disagree. both bands just show how amazing of a singer daryl is and how much his vocals can adapt to different styles of music. i love every song but beating heart baby, god and laughing at you defiantly stand out to me. the whole cd's just a fun listen and cheers me up all the time .. and great to dance crazily to when your home alone bored one day :)
***some other bands i think people might like if their into head automatica would be plain white t's, rise against, lost prophets & marianas trench. Submitted by xx.candice (Halifax, NS, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
