The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary Hill and Tim Sendra

Celtic Thunder thrives on the contrast of its various voices (four tenors and a baritone) creating a surreal musical landscape. Paul Byrum's assured operatic tones on "Remember Me (Recuerdeme)" crest against the doleful pop of Ryan Kelly's "Desperado" and the nascent rumble of Darien McGinty on "Come By the Hills." As an artist and songwriter, Smith constantly pushed the boundaries of rock's scope: The demented "Space Monkey" builds a visual landscape, "Because The Night" melds pop with literary intention, and "Ghost Dance" transcends all musical genres to become a mantra. Possibly the most powerful track on the album is Smith's epic "Babelogue/Rock N Roll Nigger" segue, where she incorporates Jimi Hendrix, Jesus Christ and Jackson Pollack into a paean to artistic individuality and its inevitable alienation.

A collaboration, but not entirely -- it's more an interwoven effort split between the work of World Standard, aka Japanese musician Sohichiro Suzuki, and Wechsel Garland, German performer Jorg Follert, who traded various elements by mail. The Isle shifts back and forth between the two, each exploring in his own way the kind of post-Beach Boys bliss pop that became commonplace in the '90s. The emphasis is much more on the melancholic instrumental contemplation conjured up in the post-Smile days of that band, though, with piano, strings, marimba, and more, used by both artists, conjuring up a hazy never-never land of tropical wonder. Follert's "A Found Chart" revolves around slightly queasy strings and gentle acoustic guitar, and Suzuki's "The Whale" has a soft, haunting lead melody that suggests Brian Eno more than Brian Wilson. There's jaunty humor in amid the careful reflection, though -- Follert's "The Long Walk" jumps along in a low-key way -- but the latter quality is what dominates. It's not meant to be a pure retro exercise by any means, though -- consider the glitchy stuttering in Suzuki's "Dandelion Wine," suddenly spiking the slow cool flow of the arrangement, or how a similar treatment to the guitar for Follert's "Octant" provides a jittering pulse to the track. Singing is rare but when it appears often adds a lovely emotional edge to things -- Follert's slightly double-tracked vocals ...
