Reggae Collection Vol. 5-Reggae Collection
$13.05 It's a minor problem, but if there's a complaint to be made about Tarrus Riley's 2009 effort CONTAGIOUS, it's that his previous effort, PARABLES, has a much better layout. The crowding together of redundant numbers and the uneven flow experienced here make CONTAGIOUS feel more like a collection of songs than a fully thought-out album, but they are great songs for the most part, performed in that dignified, warm, rasta manner that has made Riley a favorite of the new roots set. "Living the Life of a Gun" is a wonderfully smooth alternative to Anthony B. or Sizzla's social commentary, and when a children's choir enhances the moving prayer "Let Peace Reign," Riley skillfully moves into Wyclef's territory with elaborate arrangements hung on grand statements. The lovers numbers are just as good, if not better, this time out ...

| | Donavon Frankenreiter CD (Import) Japan
Reggae Collection Vol. 5-Reggae Collection
$29.99 Though Donavon Frankenreiter shares the same mellow surfer vibes as his labelmate/producer/surfing buddy Jack Johnson, the multi-syllabically named singer foregoes woozy jam-band tropes in favor of a sound reminiscent of dreamy, late-1960s soul in the Marvin Gaye/Stevie Wonder/Chi-Lites vein. Frankenreiter is possessed of a truly resonant, old-school R&B voice that is reinforced by the album's wonderfully warm, spare production. The result sounds more down-South than South Pacific. The spirited, retro-without-sounding-dated instrumental performances come courtesy of several members of Ben Harper's band, with guest appearances from Johnson and similarly groovy blues-rapper G. Love. A breezy, inviting mix of older sounds and new attitude, DONOVAN FRANKENREITER mixes Memphis, Chicago, and Detroit soul influences with a California beach-bonfire vibe.
Donavon Frankenreiter is a surfing buddy of Jack Johnson's. He also makes music that, not surprisingly, isn't too dissimilar to Johnson's. Add to that the fact that Johnson produces and plays a variety of instruments and sings on Frankenreiter's debut CD, Donavan Frankenreiter, and you have a record that is tailor-made for fans of Jack Johnson. Also for fans of laid-back, good-time ...

| | Rodney Crowell Life Is Messy CD (1992)
Reggae Collection Vol. 5-Reggae Collection
$5.95 After the commercial falloff of Keys to the Highway, Rodney Crowell took two and a half years crafting his seventh album, Life Is Messy, in the interim going through a divorce from his wife, Rosanne Cash. The most notable characteristic of Life Is Messy was that it marked a complete return to his original style. With nary a steel guitar or fiddle to be heard, and featuring top pop session musicians as well as a slew of pop guest stars (Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley, Steve Winwood, etc.), Life Is Messy wasn't really a country record at all. A couple of songs had a country-rock, honky tonk feel, but the dominant musical style was a pastiche of late-'50s/early-'60s pop. The title song was a somewhat abstract meditation on romantic discord and career disappointment that was followed by the equally despairing "I Hardly Know How to Be Myself," which actually had been co-written with Cash. These songs sounded so pained and deeply felt that some of the more uptempo songs came off as trivial, even if they made for a change of pace. But other songs came up to their standard without being quite so low in mood. "Alone But Not Alone" ...
