With an approach that sounds like the Cars colliding with the Backstreet Boys, the Click Five has carved out a musical niche that combines driving power-pop with soaring teen anthems. This fresh-faced Massachusetts quartet excels at light, catchy tunes that glide along smoothly on crystal-clear vocal harmonies, punchy guitars, and prominent synthesizers. In fact, it's no surprise that the group's main songwriter is keyboardist Ben Romans, who gilds many of the tracks on GREETINGS FROM IMRIE HOUSE with up-front, retro-sounding keys. The band enlists the songwriting help of Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger on the pop-perfect New Wave-tinged "Just the Girl," which showcases frontman Eric Dill's assertive vocals, and the organ-driven ballad "I'll Take My Chances," while "Lies" revisits the Thompson Twins' 1980s hit with verve. A fun, immediately engaging record, this debut, with its deft balancing of unabashed pop and high-energy rock, has "Top 40" written all over it.

| | Last Town Chorus CD (2003)
Greetings From Imrie House MP3 Album
$13.69 The Last Town Chorus, aka singer, songwriter, and lap steel guitarist Megan Hickey and guitarist Matt Guy, self-released their first album in 2003; the estimable British indie Blast First reissued the set in 2005, just before the duo split up. (Hickey has since maintained the band name with various guest musicians.) The Last Town Chorus is a bare-bones slice of dream pop that owes equal amounts to the 4AD Records ethos of atmosphere above all and the downcast ache of the mid-'90s slowcore bands like Low and Bedhead. Barring a few minimal bass, organ, and percussion overdubs, these nine songs consist entirely of Hickey's mournful vocals and idiosyncratic lap steel playing, with Guy's effects-heavy guitar lines in a decidedly secondary accompanist role. Hickey, originally a bassist, had ...
| | Burial CD (2006)
Greetings From Imrie House music CDs
$13.79 (MP3 Available for Download) Wire Magazine honored this 2006 release - ''one of the best of the year.'' This first album on Kode9's Hyperdub label comes from the mysterious Burial. On this stunning self-titled CD debut, Burial carves out a sound which sends the dormant slinky syncopations of UK garage, via radio interference, into a padded cell of cushioned, muffled bass, passing through the best of Pole's Berlin crackle dub. Burial explores a tangential, parallel dimension of the growing sound of dubstep. Burial's parallel dimension sounds set in a near future South London underwater. You can never tell if the crackle is the burning static off pirate radio transmissions, or the tropical downpour of the submerged city outside the window. In their sometimes suffocating melancholy, most of these tracks seem to yearn for drowned lovers. The smouldering desire of "Distant Lights" is cooled only by the percussive ice sharp slicing of blades and jets of hot air blowing from the bass. Listen also for a fleeting appearance from Hyperdub's resident vocalist, the Spaceape unravelling his crypto-biography. In its loud quietness, Burial takes his kitchen crackle aesthetic neither from the digital glitch nor merely from a nostalgia for vinyl's materiality. Instead, as "Pirates" suggests, Burial's crackle mutates the ...
