Buxtehude: Organ Works
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want to arrange it/This world you can change it/If we could somehow make this/Christmas thing last/By helping a neighbor/Or ...

Buxtehude: Organ Works
$10.15 Frank Levin, a contemporary composer of dozens of songs, piano and small ensemble pieces, has come up with his first CD, a retrospective of some of the best of his piano music, beautifully performed by award-winning pianist Scott Pratt. The CD, entitled "Morning to Midnight", includes the suite by that name, six pieces from Frank's "San Francisco Souvenirs", a seasonal cycle, and a variety of other works, including several dedicated to students, family, and friends.Response to the CD of piano music has been overwhelmingly positive from the many fans who have already purchased it. "I love it. I play it in the car and in the office. It's relaxing, like being on vacation," said Nellie Keate, a realtor who bought the CD and then came back to purchase several more for friends and family at the CD Release Party. Christine Ho, one of Frank's piano students, was not surprised at the positive reception: "I've played a number of the piano works on the CD...and really enjoyed them."Dick Wahlberg, recording engineer for the project, was full of praise for pianist, Scott Pratt's contribution. "Every take was an honest performance," he told a reporter."There is not one throw-away track among the twenty five, and every performance is definitive," said Levin. "We recorded slowly over a two year period-no more than three or four tracks at a session-and Scott rehearsed each selection with me several times before entering the studio to ensure every nuance was perfect. And the accompanying booklet notes help to illuminate details of this often descriptive piano music."Levin's tuneful, often deeply moving and accessible style of piano writing has gained him considerable acclaim over the years. And listeners have found it suitable for work, study and fine dining in addition to serious listening. The noted cabaret artist Wesla Whitfield, who sang for the president in a command performance at the White House and regularly plays San Francisco's prestigious Plush Room and the equally legendary Algonquin Room in New York, is among his admirers. Wesla recorded four songs from his long-running musical revue "Never a White Christmas", celebrating the holidays in snowless San Francisco. Her performance of the title song won her a first prize in an original christmas song contest and gained Frank a recording contract.Frank received much of his formal training at the San Francisco Conservatory, where he studied with Dr. Sol Joseph, Nathan Schwartz, and the now-famous composer John Adams. In addition, he took jazz theory classes with Jim Grantham, and songwriting and arranging lessons with film composer, Gary Remal.Scott Pratt, a California native, has performed throughout California and much of the United States. He is a frequent solo and chamber music recitalist in San Francisco. Scott has received top prizes in many competitions, including the National Guild of Piano Teachers International Recording Competition, the La Jolla Civic Symphony Competition, and several categories of the San Francisco Concerto Orchestra Competition. He teaches in The San Francisco Conservatory of Music's Preparatory and Extension Division and at Laney College in Oakland. In commenting about his work on this CD, Scott observed, "I enjoy playing Frank's music because it is expressive, ...
