From the National Film Board of Canada comes this two disc set celebrating the music of New Orleans in three separate programs. The first, Maroon - On the Trail of Creoles in North America, is a documentary focused on Louisianas Creole culture and the emergence of jazz. The second, "Zarico", is a documentary detailing the distinct folk music of the Black Francophone Creole culture of southwestern Louisiana. The third program, "Liberty Street Blues", features a tour of the birthplace of modern jazz with Michael White, university professor and clarinet player. The three programs in this collection explore the contemporary Creole culture, which is currently endangered, by examining its history. The unique and historically influential Creole culture comes alive in the documentary MAROON, by Andre Gladu. Drawing upon roots that encompass Spanish, French, African, American, and Caribbean elements, Creole culture is lively and diverse, as exemplified in their music, which helped shape contemporary jazz. ZARICO takes a look at the folk music made by black Francophone Creoles in southwestern Louisiana, and LIBERTY STREET BLUES tours the birthplace of jazz with expert Michael White.
This is the only Andre Gladu video.
