(37 Customer Reviews)
On her third studio album, LOOSE, Nelly Furtado largely abandons the bohemian vibe of previous outings, opting for an energetic, club-ready sound said to be influenced by the time she spent recording in Miami. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter approaches this significant change with wild abandon, as revealed on the sensual singles "Promiscuous," a remarkably catchy dance-pop tune that features Timbaland, and "Maneater," a leering, techno-tinged track. The percussive "No Hay Igual" finds Furtado delving into reggaeton, while "Te Busque" presents the soulful vocalist performing a melancholy duet with Colombian heartthrob Juanes. Though some Furtado fans may initially be perplexed by this dramatic sonic shift, repeated listens reveal the record's charms, particularly on the soaring, synth-laden opener "Afraid" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)," a thoughtful pop ballad co-penned by Coldplay's Chris Martin (who was once rumored to be her boyfriend). An unpredictable and assured album, LOOSE proves that Furtado can wander down unfamiliar stylistic roads and return with fascinating results.Rolling Stone (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Timbaland brings her back on LOOSE to scat her quirky high-school-musical vocals over his mostly Eighties beats..." Entertainment Weekly (p.68) - "Much of Furtado's charm comes from her low-key, girlish sensuality....The most striking songs are in Spanish." -- Grade: B- Q (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[M]uch of it is an inventive, hip-hop-inflected delight." Q (p.118) - Ranked #55 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006." Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Promiscuous' features the booming tones of Mr. Land himself, alongside Furtado's breathy, come-hither vocals." 'Loose' defines it well. A suprise, after her review unworthy album Folklore. Really. I bought Folklore, hated it so much that it went to the garbage can after 4 songs. This album was not what i expected to follow. A huge change in sound, extremely noticable with Promiscuous and Maneater,a more girl rap feeling to it than i like...but she did excellent on Say it Right, and pleased me to no end with All Good Things Come To An End. That song is beautiful, and, with its seemingly orchestrated sadness puts a different kind of burning sensation in your heart than most other 'sad' pop songs do. Worth the buy just on the account of All Good Things. Submitted by EstyabonSanchez (Anytown, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Loose album
$16.15 Christina Aguilera seemed intent on constantly reinventing herself over the course of her first several albums, and it's hard not to be impressed by her leaps from teen-pop sensation (1999 self-titled debut) to raunchy, sexually precocious R&B singer (2002's STRIPPED) to blues and jazz-steeped diva on 2006's BACK TO BASICS. With its smoky torch songs, occasional big-band arrangements, ...
| | Fergie The Dutchess CD (2006)
Loose CD music
$10.95 The first release on Black Eyed Pea will.i.am's record label, THE DUTCHESS seems intent on giving Beyonce, Kelis, and every female pop/R&B singer a run for her money. With production help from Polow the Don and will.i.am (who also contributes raps to a couple of songs), Fergie delivers a record that kicks out spare club tracks inspired by Missy Elliott and M.I.A. (such as the disc's lead-off single "London Bridge"), alongside sultry soul ballads ("Clumsy"). There aren't many surprises here, but THE DUTCHESS ...
| | Justin Timberlake Futuresex / Lovesounds CD (2006)
Loose music CDs
$9.59 Music critics and highbrow listeners may look down their nose at Justin Timberlake, doubting that the celebrated former N'Sync leader is good for more than light, frothy dance-pop. Timberlakes's sophomore effort, FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS, should make both camps rethink that stance. While the album certainly sets out to entertain, it's also full of ambitious, well-constructed grooves that prove the superstar is serious about getting down and dirty. The album steps up the Michael Jackson-influenced sound of JUSTIFIED by delving deeper into club music, hip-hop, and funk, creating a bumping, writhing soundtrack for a set of songs unabashedly about sex.
Timberlake spared no expense recruiting some of the best producers on the scene. Beatmaker extraordinaire Timbaland is a primary collaborator, and his experimental stutter-funk landscapes make for the album's best moments (the title track, for example, or the spare, driving lead-off single "Sexyback"). Early Prince is a major touchstone for much of ...
| | Fugazi 13 Songs CD (1990)
Loose songs
$10.65 13 SONGS combines the eponymous EP and the MARGIN WALKER mini-LP on one CD.
Combining the band's first two EPs, Fugazi's 13 SONGS is nothing less than a landmark hardcore album. From the unmistakable opening bass line of "Waiting Room" to the cathartic finale of "Promises," the record is DIY post-punk at its finest. And though the quartet would become known for its anti-corporate/consumerism stance, 13 SONGS is all about unapologetically intense music.
Founded by ex-Minor Threat and Embrace frontman Ian MacKaye, ...
| | Ween Pod CD (1991)
Loose album
$25.59 Another collection of inspired pop pastiche and four-track dementia, 1991's The Pod is nearly as long as GodWeenSatan: The Oneness but even weirder and more deranged, due in large part to the band's Scotchguard habit and the severe cases of mononucleosis Gene and Dean Ween contracted while recording the album. As a result, The Pod is dark and murky, with a slightly distant, fuzzy feel. On some songs, such as the cryptic, prog-inspired "Right to the Ways and the Rules of the World," the psych-tinged "Dr. Rock," and the mystic hard rock of "Captain Fantasy," this sound works well, but on others -- like the opening track "Strap on That Jammypac" -- it just doesn't fit. Ween flexes their stylistic chops a bit on "Sorry Charlie"'s country-rock, "Sketches of Winkle"'s crazed speed metal, "Oh My Dear"'s cute four-track, and "Pork Roll Egg and Cheese"'s Beatlesque psych-pop, but the majority of The Pod, for better or worse, focuses on sludgy weirdness like "Molly," "Awesome Sound," "Laura," and "Can U Taste the Waste?" That most of these songs are grouped together in the middle ...
| | Cranes Live In Italy CD (2003)
Loose CD music
$9.69 Combining two minor releases -- a live album and a remix EP -- Live in Italy & Submarine is a value-for-money purchase for fans that more casual listeners can bypass without terribly much regret. Cranes' ability to re-create their studio sound live is quite impressive for a band whose sonic attributes (besides Alison Shaw's startlingly wispy babytalk vocals) sound on record like they're the results of much Cocteau Twins-style effects and processing, but that unfortunately means that when one gets right down to it, Live in Italy is basically a live album that's more or less indistinguishable from the studio records. Submarine is a nine-track remix EP with four mixes each of the two singles from Cranes' comeback album Future Songs, "Submarine" and "Don't Wake Me Up," along with one mellow down-tempo version of "Driving in the Sun" from the same album. The mixes vary only slightly in mood and arrangement, and the collection as a whole is strictly for completists. ~ Stewart Mason
Despite this album's title, it was actually recorded all across Europe and the United Kingdom, in Pordenone, Rome, Ancona, Amsterdam, Vienna and the Cranes' home base of Portsmouth during their 2002 tour. Live albums usually disappoint for one of two reasons: either the band sounds nothing like it does in the studio (rich production is replaced by thin live arrangements and dodgier singing) or the band sounds exactly like it does in the studio, making you wonder why you spent the fifteen bucks on an album that sounds just like all the other ones you've already spent fifteen bucks on. Fans of the Cranes, though, should be perfectly happy with Live in Italy, because it splits the ...
