| | Handsome Boy Modeling School So... How's Your Girl? CD (1999)
Dark Noize Recordings Presents: DNR - Vol. 1 music CDs
$13.89 Handsome Boy Modeling School is the tag for the unearthly union of producer Prince Paul and beatmaster Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, the forces behind two of the most universally acclaimed hip-hop records. While each man has recorded worthy solo records, each is better known for his individual connections to the clasics 3 FEET HIGH & RISING, by De La Soul and OCTAGONYCOLOGIST, by Dr. Octagon.
When one ponders the referential nature of those albums and the fact that this project takes its name from an obscure episode of the early-'90s Chris Elliott TV vehicle "Get a Life," one might expect similar goofiness. Other than samples of that show, a phone conversation with the unbeatable Biz Markie, and a hilarious monologue from Don Novello's eternal alter-ego Father Guido Sarducci, SO...HOW'S YOUR GIRL is a hyper-serious collection of genre-bending ...

| | Lula Reed I'll Drown In My Tears CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Dark Noize Recordings Presents: DNR - Vol. 1 album
$16.65 Although Lula Reed did record after 1955 for Chess and Tangerine (and for the King subsidiary Federal), this 24-track anthology wholly sticks to her 1952-1955 King recordings. In addition to numerous singles, it has four 1952-1953 sides she did as vocalist with Sonny Thompson & His Orchestra -- one of those being her most famous recording, "I'll Drown in My Tears" -- as well as a previously unissued outtake and a previously unavailable alternate of "Bump on a Log." Like much of the R&B from the era, it's transitional music, owing something to jazz in the arrangements but more to blues in the songwriting, with some hints of the coming rock & roll era in some doo wop-flavored vocals. It's not part of the upper crust of early-'50s R&B -- it's a little journeywoman, in part because so many of the songs are similar midtempo urbane jazzy blues ballads, in part because Reed's high and slightly pinched voice really isn't that excellent. By far the most notable of these tracks is "I'll Drown in My Tears," later covered by Ray Charles for a hit as "Drown in My Own Tears"; Reed's version isn't as agonizingly slow, but nor is it nearly as memorable, though it did make number five in the R&B charts. The pace varies a little into uptempo jump at times, with a little gospel on "A Quiet Time With Jesus," a bit of a down-home blues flavor in the acoustic guitar on "Troubles on Your Mind," and a little early rock & roll in 1955's "I'm Giving All My Love" and "Rock Love" (the latter of which was covered for a ...
| | Curtis Fuller Up Jumped Spring CD (2004)
Dark Noize Recordings Presents: DNR - Vol. 1 CD music
$13.29 Over the years, Curtis Fuller has recorded the majority of his albums in New York City. But when the veteran trombonist visited Chicago for the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2003, he joined forces with several Windy City musicians (including Karl Montzka on piano, Larry Gray or Stewart Miller on bass, and Tim Davis on drums) and recorded Up Jumped Spring for Bob Koester's Chicago-based Delmark label. Trumpeter Brad Goode (who was a fixture on the Chi-Town jazz scene before moving to Cincinnati in 1997) is also on board, as is singer Jacey Falk (who produced the album). Fuller (who was 68 when he recorded Up Jumped Spring) was one of Art Blakey's ...
